I've had my Anthurium andraeanum for 5 years and it's never given me flowers. I water it once a week in winter and twice in summer. It's mostly in the shade. It's not looking very pretty. What can I do?

Welcome!
Is the plant getting enough sun? If it has too much shade it will not bloom.

Knowing your location would help. Morning sun in Maine or Michigan is far different than morning sun in Mexico or Southern California. They don't like direct sunlight so should be fine indoors with bright diffused light. They don't like to be chilly or sit in a drafty area. (I almost killed one of mine by setting it too close to a cold, drafty window). Are you keeping the humidity levels up? Anthuriums benefit from regular doses of fertilizer; how often are you fertilizing? Sorry for too many questions.

Hey thanks! Im in tropical north Qld(Australia). Morning sun is pretty intense and i think anymore than that might be too much. I fertalise it every 2-3 months. It's practically never exposed to chilly temperatures where we are. Its always hot. So i water it once a week in winter and 2-3 times in summer(we r almost reaching 40°C these days). Cheers Thank You!

I think it needs to be fertilized more often, every 2 weeks, but use either a slow release fertilizer or dilute the liquid type.
In our database there are zero photos of this plant although 3 members own them. Shrug!

I will us the @ symbol to request two of these members to chime in; hopefully they will provide better answers to encourage you Anthurium andraeanum to bloom in tropical north Qld, Australia.

@vbprog

Edited to add:
Using a diluted liquid fertilizer to spray the foliage may help the plant take in the nutrients.

Hi Crissy, I just posted a couple photos of my plant to be sure we are talking about the same plant here. I identified it off of Google images so hope it's right.

Otherwise I'm not sure I'll be much help. This is a plant I bought in a home store for my mother in law. She gave it back to me after a couple weeks because she didn't like it. It has just been a house plant for us for about a year now. It never goes outside. It sits by a very sunny bay window. I have fed it only some diluted seaweed solution occasionally, along with all of our indoor plants.

I do notice that it wakes up and blooms during our colder months, like now. The larger bottom leaves yellow and drop off but there is always new growth coming up. This blooming time could be because more sun comes in this particular window this time of year though.

It is a very interesting plant. The new growth, both leaves and bloom, are a brownish color. Then the leaves turn a glossy green and the blooms a glossy red. Then there is the yellow (I don't know, sex thing) that grows out of the middle of the bloom.

I've never repotted it from its store bought container.
If you don't lose some plants to the weather this year, you aren't trying hard enough. - Glenn Hasulak
