Willow Tea for "No Cost" Rooting of Cuttings

By Horseshoe
August 24, 2011

Need a "no cost" solution for rooting cuttings? Try willow tea. Use green willow branches steeped in warm water and cooled overnight, This solution will stimulate rooting, growth, and good health for cuttings as well as for established plants. The growing tips of willow branches possess high levels of the auxin indolebutyric acid, a synthetic form of which is used in most commercial rooting compounds.

Great tip, but you're just enabling us to grow more plants than we can possibly take care of. Oh never mind, I like having too many plants! I have a willow at the lake I can snip.

The guy that dug both our wells was a water witcher, too. One time with a branch, another time with clothes hanger wire. Good success both times.

Lynn, your coleus you're rooting probably won't need anything, willow tea or commercial hormone, those will easily root on command.

Hemophobic/Angie:
"Shoe, I would like to root some roses, clematis, anemones, hydrangeas."

Roses are best rooted in June around here. However, you can try some older wood cuttings leaving some tip growth on them. In our zone/area you could even do those directly in the ground in a shady area (dappled sun) and use a bottomless jar over them to hold in moisture. Don't do this in full sun or they'll stay too damp from the condensation buildup.

Hydrangeas can be rooted now, use new growth and cut where it meets the old growth. I like to use nursery pots or plastic totes for a lot of rootings. The pots you can put several cuttings in and slip the pots in a plastic grocery bag, freeing you up to tie and untie the top "ears" to allow excess condensation out and to allow the proper gas exchange.

I've never rooted clematis or anemones so someone else may have to take the ball on those.

Here are pics of gardenia cuttings, rooted with willow tea, and with quite a few cuttings in a mum pot enclosed in a bag. The second pic is 41 days later, showing the roots.

Hope this helps.

I love gardenias, I think they are my most favorite fragrant flower. They go way back to my youth and Sunday school class so have been in my life a long time.

Since there was mention of hydrangea on this thread, here are some hydrangea cuttings in a plastic tote box. See how many you can get in there.

And Vic...these are cuttings off the plant you brought to MoonDance Farm during our Kandy Korn celebration day (entirely too many years ago)!
Although the flowers from the shrub in the ground are blue, the cuttings gave a pinkish flower due to the potting medium used. Once in the ground they, too, will have blue flowers. (Didja ever remember the name of that one?)

I wonder if the tea would help old seeds to sprout, if you soak them in it? Might have to try that next year...

Hah! Lynn, the command words only work if you stick your thumbs in your belt loops, squint in a wise-looking manner at the potted cuttings, pretend you have a chaw in your cheek, and say, "Let's git 'er done...". Nod your head at them in a knowing way and you're good to go!

Uh,
I'm seriously open to receiving some rooted hydrangea cuttings for my new landscaping project. I think there are at least TWO hydrangeas in the plan... Rolling my eyes.

Thanks, Vic. You should see the plant you gave us now...It's huge!

As for its name, I'm sure someone on ATP can help identify it for us. I gave several to Nancy Goodwin at Montrose Gardens and she likes knowing the names of things. Me? I just call it "the blue one"! Smiling

Linda, since the willow tea seems to initiate cell growth I bet it may help play a role in seed soaking. We should do some planned tests, eh?

If I have some small hydrangea cuttings, mailing size, maybe I can stick a couple in when I send you the white okra seeds.

Best,
Shoe

I also love this tip! Now I have a question, and it might be a dumb one, because I only moved to Colorado 3 years ago and of course I couldn't grow hydrangeas in AZ... but I have bought and planted two, one in each of the past two years. They were growing in pots, and I put them in the dirt in my raised bed in fall. Neither have done squat, maybe a couple of leaves but that is it. They are supposed to be hardy here. Any help or ideas? Will willow tea help them? Now or in the spring? Thanks in advance...

Coleus roots ridiculously easily in water: just put the stems and water and wait a couple of weeks. You can have more than you know what to do with - no magic words necessary.

Brenda, is your hydrangea in full sun? They tend to be more dappled sun or part shade. Morning sun maybe but not hot afternoon sun.

The hydrangea I posted above gets maybe an hour of sun a day and the rest is shade.
