Willow Tea for "No Cost" Rooting of Cuttings

By Horseshoe
August 24, 2011

Need a "no cost" solution for rooting cuttings? Try willow tea. Use green willow branches steeped in warm water and cooled overnight, This solution will stimulate rooting, growth, and good health for cuttings as well as for established plants. The growing tips of willow branches possess high levels of the auxin indolebutyric acid, a synthetic form of which is used in most commercial rooting compounds.

My hydrangeas have struggled too but they are in an area with a lot of old tree roots and I think that's the problem. Sometimes it's what's around them rather than the plants themselves. Big Grin
I garden for the pollinators.

Tee, I think that may be the issue. We built this raised bed 3 years ago, all pristine with compost and topsoil mix, but it is completely surrounded by big trees, and I have found that this year, every time I try to plant something in there, I have to cut through tons of roots. I think next spring we are going to have to dig a lot of it out and get rid of some of the tree roots. I don't want to disturb the things that are doing well, though. That is going to take some work. So what grows well in full shade with tons of roots to fight through? Hilarious!

Lily of the Valley is the only thing I've planted that's prospered under an old dogwood, spruce and maple. The Heuchera are marginal. I've had to dig a trench around the larger Hosta and fill w/soil. Astilbe, Helebore and ferns aren't really doing great. Maybe we should make lists of what doesn't do well for us? Big Grin

Oh yes I forgot violets and weeds. Nothing against violets, but here (they grow everywhere) violet=weed.

Plenty of nice people there --- really nice --- and they all got a brother in law who's got some piece of machinery what kin do th' job but it's broke right now but as soon's we git it fittized up we'll be ober In do it fer ya!

Seriously, the people are as good as they come. It's just that they live in a backwards place. Right Ginger?

I may have yellow violets. Someone gave them to me and said they were yellow but then said they came back white. I will have to wait and see. Got tons of purple and blue violets all over the backyard and now moving to the front yard. I love them. Thumbs up

If they turn out to be yellow, I'll keep you in mind, gingin. I love to share plants! Makes me happy. Big Grin
