lourspolaire said: I won't throw chicken on that grill any time soon, except if I make kebabs. Those, I cook well. And I'm not fanatical enough to sit by it for hours, basting it endlessly.

Okay, I had to jump in. Seriously, M. Lourspolaire, chicken on the grill has got your knickers in a twist? You know well not to sweat the small stuff. This, you say, is not the small stuff for you? Par-boil it. Par-bake it. Par-cook it in a style that works for you. Finish it on the grill. I go for boiling as it's easy, then I season it, put it on the grill for just a bit and finish it with bbq sauce and a nice sear. Easy, breezy, and very tasty...and a crowd favorite.

Let me add I have enjoyed this blog of yours here, a blog which you do well to share with this community. Snakes were my first personal pets. My sister raised white rats. A very symbiotic relationship, at least in my view, albeit a bit Adams Family+. We shared the dog and the cats. (None were eaten.) I loved the snakes, and am sorry that I never had one such as yours. Pythons (along with cobras, rattlesnakes, and a list of others) were not allowed. Additionally, I smoke cigars. I have not been on many cruises but am glad to have picked up the tip to look for a cruise where I can enjoy a fine smoke. Thanks for that. And although I do from time to time think to compose a thought and turn it into prose, it's not often that I do such. Your thoughtfulness in expression and composition is appreciated. I may well read, but am not one who is likely to often pop in here. You do well enough on your own.

All the best to you and yours. And do consider that barbequed chicken is an American standard winner for a reason *wink*, one which carries no reason for you, qui aime bien les bons gouts, not to conquer it.

Hi, everyone.

Next time we want grilled chicken, there is a Pollo Tropical less than 1 mile away from here and I'll use their online ordering system and drive-through services. First, they make great grilled chicken. Second, I figure I deserve a night off once in a while and everyone here likes Pollo Tropical. I'm at ease with the fact that grilling chicken is not one of the things I do well. I won't lose any sleep over that. I know people who break out the recipe book to make toast, so even with such a seemingly insurmountable difficulty in my path, it can't be considered life threatening by any means.

To answer your question, uneaten rodents are thrown away first thing the following morning. We don't want to take a chance on Lucy eating carrion; poor baby could get sick with that kind of stunt. She'll get another chance at another freshly thawed rodent in 3 days. She's not suffering. We see to her well-being.

We were glad to watch the latest episode of The Vikings last night. We love that series. One of the main characters killed a priest in the last episode we saw last Fall. Last night, he was arrested and it's not looking well for him. Dad is not overly fond of that show, but both Gail and I really like it.

I will now go play with Lucy and enjoy the rest of my evening.

Take care, everyone.
Sylvain.

Excellent logic, Sylvain!

We're having "grilled brown sugar pork chops" tonight, thanks to a bit of a break in the weather (our temp was up to 44F today!). Well, that's not to say that we never use the grill when the weather is colder, because yes, we are crazy and winter can get pretty long up here!

I put my grill up in the farm shop for the winter, so if I want to grill something, I have to go drag it out and do my "cooking" up there. LOL There's a TV in the shop, or I take up reading material, so it's not all that bad. Just have to remember to not get too engrossed in either diversion or I will have burned meat. Ah yes, the BBQ spending the Winter months by the patio door on the terrace, grilling in polar temperatures. I don't miss it one bit. One spring, I noticed a lot of wasps entering the BBQ through its various openings. The place was busier than O'hare airport at rush hour. Gail is highly allergic to stings, so I had to act quickly. I was reluctant to use pesticides because we cook food in there. I figured there was a great big wasps' nest in there, so I did the first thing I could think of: I blocked the exits with aluminium foil, turned on the gas full blast and hit the igniter. A few escaped the inferno, but too few to worry about. When it stopped smoking, I rinsed it all away with the hose and ran it on high heat for 15 minutes: like a self-cleaning cycle. Not a wasp, or a nest to be found inside and rather fun to do, too. I wouldn't hurt a honey bee, but I hate those big yellow jacket wasps with a passion. Of course here, the grill is outside year-round and we use it year-round, too. It sits under the edge of the carport, so rain is no problem, either. I like it here.

Take care, everyone.
Sylvain.

Oh, those darn wasps/hornets seem to get in everywhere and anywhere! We've had them in our siding, they plug up the hoses and other stuff with mud, and a couple of years ago we had 2 big hornet nests, one in a hidden spot in the greenhouse and one under our deck, that we had to get rather creative to get rid of... I don't mind a bit if they want to live in the woods, which we certainly have plenty of, but really just can't tolerate them when they try to keep me out of the GH or attack people and pets on the deck! Sylvain,
I see, you give her a chance to eat. I'd toss it too since I never re-freeze my own meats thawed meats.
Carrion, yes, that puts a new perspective on it!

Sandy,
Any tolerable temp is good for grilling out if you have a good meat!
(I don't touch the grill either. I'm wayyy too busy making a salad or vegetable :o)

Anymore I hate to kill things, but sometimes you have to. I'm getting soft in my old age.

My SU absolutely REFUSES to grill. Nope, nada, nyet..............ain't gonna do it. *sigh*............I told him grilling was a "guy thing" and his sons do it. Why is it that *I* was good enough to haul manure and load my own loads when we still had beasts, but he cannot grill???? Hmmmmm???????????? Can a man give me some insight on this????? Am I asking too much?

Hi, everyone.

Grey and rainy day here, dampish with a bit of breeze. However, it's comfortable and dry under the carport. Today is Sunday, arthritis medication day, aka The Day Of Our Discontent. Nothing much ever happens here on Sundays. Gail falls asleep when the medication kicks in, so quiet is the order of the day. Not that she is tyrannical about it, but we believe in letting her get as much rest as she can.

Grilling is NOT a guy thing. Beer ads like to make it look that way. A man looks manlier with a long-handled spatula in one hand and a cold brewsky in the other, they purport. I don't buy it. A lot of guys who can't make toast for themselves without setting them on fire resort to grilling to make up for their appalling lack of proficiency in the kitchen. Like a woman will find her man more attractive after grilling some kind of beast. Mom told them not to use sharp knives because she was afraid of them herself. There was not a sharp knife in that kitchen to start with and she didn't want a 9-fingered little moron running around the house. Also, she didn't want to clean up after little Johnny, Jane or Theodore either. Those 2.7 average kids (Theo was not all there) grew up knowing where the kitchen was, but not knowing what to do in it. Good moms let the kids lick the beaters. Very good moms stop the mixer first.

Growing up, my grandmother did all the cooking because my mom wanted a career as a cashier in our local savings & loans bank. Sadly, mom had no discernible cooking skills that I could ever observe, either. I was 9 years old when grandma died. The quality of the food degenerated rapidly. That's when I started cooking. The rules were simple: burn nothing, waste nothing and eat what you make (no matter horrible it is). We wuz poo'. And I forget about the most important thing of all: clean up after yourself. I was sharpening knives and honing them by the time I was 10. They were like razors and even mom was afraid to use them. I still have all of my 10 fingers. I am missing a toe, but that was an infection gone horribly wrong, not the result of dropping one of my knives while wearing flip-flops.

I still recall my dad's reaction when I started cooking. When mom tried to calm him down, he answered: "Jesus, Mary and Joseph on a tricycle, Murielle, where did you go wrong? Should I get him a doll and a frilly apron, too? Don't you dare tell anyone about this. I'll be the laughing stock at the Knights of Columbus hall. Where did you go wrong?".

Just for the record, dad knew we owned a charcoal grill. He knew where it was, but he had no idea what to do with it. But he's sure lip-smacking glad I cook now. Last week, he told me he would make his own toast. I almost got me a case of the vapors and like Scarlet O'Hara, I told myself: "Prissy, open that there yonder windaw and fetch me mah smelling salts, Ah may faint". Ten minutes later, he was reading quietly and no toast had been eaten. I decided to investigate. He got 2 slices whole wheat bread and inserted them into the toaster; so far, so good. And he walked away. His toaster in Montreal lowers the toast automatically. Now if you ask me, that's quite the technological work saver. So, he didn't push down the little lever on ours. So there sat his 2 slices bread. I pressed the little lever, pulled out the butter and the caramel spread and finished getting his breakfast together. But his heart was in the right place. He gets an A+ for effort, but an F for results. I demonstrated the use of the little lever when he was done with breakfast because I figured there was no sense trying to teach someone about the intricacies of toaster operation on an empty stomach.

Lucy has climbed all the way to the top of her jungle gym and is giving me the eye. Gail might want to handle her a bit. And then I may take her outside for a bit. Lucy likes sniffing the breeze with her little tongue. I like sitting outside with Lucy draped behind my neck. Snakes make awesome pets.

Tonight's dessert will be homemade apple pie. I have no idea what I'll make for a main course. Let's hope Escopia will bring a bit of inspiration. I'd like curried goat, but that dish is forbidden in our house. Gail can't stand the smell, or sight of it and only heathen eat goat meat, I am told. I beg to differ. Too bad, because I learned to make, grind and bloom my own garam masala from whole spices and it is SO good. That would make an awesome dinner with some coconut rice. I wish there were an Indian restaurant around here. As far as ethnic dining is concerned, South Florida is a dismal desert: Italian, burgers, Chinese and that's about it. How I miss that little hole in the wall of an Indian restaurant in Montreal where you walked in, sat with strangers at the first available chair and were served the day's dish in a stainless steel 3-section tray. It was heaven for $5.95/person including dessert. No chance of seeing that anywhere in these parts any time soon.

Take care, everyone.
Sylvain.

Anna,
You poor thing!
I am so glad DH does the grilling. I tried once and well, now he does it all.
Who cooks on a camp out? I think that's where most guys get the idea it's their job.

Sylvain,
My Grandma couldn't cook to save her life and you've NEVER had macaroni and cheese like hers, lol! But my Mom was an excellent cook!
ROTFL! I couldn't even picture your Dad in the story, with the Dad who lives with you now. Too funny now, but probably not so much then. I'm glad you were you and kept on going.
Awww, cute toaster story!
I just love how Lucy can make her needs known.

I've always thought there was a connection between men, raw meat and fire. My hubby grills and I'm glad he does, whatever the reason. The reason is mostly because I ask him and we both like the result.

Sandy, that is a beautiful cat in your avatar!

We gave up grilling a long time ago because DH wasn't able to swallow well. We didn't eat that much beef other than ground beef or crockpot stew. When I want a good grilled steak, I go out to eat.

The only thing I ever cook on the grill is blackened fish. I tried cooking that in the house...once. The exhaust fan on my stove top is quite good, but not THAT good! Oh, dear, not doing that again! The fish was really good, but the running eyes and noses most definitely were not! Hilarious!
