When I see the word "rollers" the first thing that comes to my mind is bicycle rollers used off season for indoor practice; secondly I would think of the old hair rollers; third would be a rolling pin to roll out pie crust or cookie dough. I would never have thought of a plant of any kind.

Sure, I could look this up and have the Google explain it but will get better answers if I post it as an "Ask A Question for the experienced plant people to explain:

Why are some Sempervivum called "Rollers" or "Roller"? This inquiring mind wants to know.

The offsets of "rollers" detach very easily and roll away. Simple as that! Just barely brush against them then off they come. I have some planted on my "table garden" and they roll right off the table. I am forever picking them up and poking them back in the soil.

I'm not sure if I have seen this before does anyone have pictures

Here is one in the database. You can see that there are some offsets that have detached from the "mother" at about 7:00 and 2:00.

I'd never heard the plant term "Rollers" before ATP and had never heard the explanation as to why they were called that ... so thank you @pardalinum Connie!

Which led me to ask the question "Why are some Semps called rollers" which in turn caused @plantcollector to jump in to ask for photos.

Even with all the rain and the work I had to do today, this one question made it a fun day for me.

One thing always leads to another ...

So... I started working on the pebble planter. The stupid pebbles I'm attempting to affix to the sides wont stay in place! They keep ROLLING around. I planned on planting a orchid in it. Now I think it will make a lovely home for a roller.

Are your rocks clean? Gluing rocks are no different than gluing any two surfaces together. The surfaces must be clean. Dirt, dust, oils, etc. will always cause problems. Pea rock, for instance, used for mulching is very dusty. You would need to wash it.

What type of glue are you using?

I'm using those rocks that come in a small bag from the doller store. I think that might be to big. It was the smallest ones that had.

Adhesive? Glue? Sticky stuff? What kind please?

Oh yeah. Elmers white glue.

Yeah, I think you're right: the rocks are to big for runny glue. Maybe if you bulked the glue up by first mixing some sand with it?

I just found some craft glue. It's working a lot better.

You want to be sure to use some type of waterproof adhesive, otherwise when they get wet they'll fall off. Hubby just found a new type of adhesive for me that would work great for this. It's called Amazing GOOP Lawn & Garden. Here's a link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00176JCF0/

Chris is right about the waterproof part. And Elmers white glue will most definitely soften in water. That GOOP sounds like some good stuff!
Nice looking rocks you got there, Heath. That should look really good when finished.

I saw online where one person used a type of latex caulk...don't know how the plants would react to that stuff but it sure held the rocks on really good.

You could put a plastic liner inside the pot to protect the plant from the latex, I suppose.
