Dave, Thanks for the information. Sure is a puzzle, especially since they are all clones. What did you think of the taste of the fruits? I found that I had to leave them on the plant an extra month after they looked ripe to me before they sweetened up. Of course, that gave the birds a chance at them, but for some reason the birds would usually not take them. I do like the dryed ones

Yeah mine were not particularly sweet. They were a strange earthy fruit flavor that wasn't bad but wasn't what I would call delicious. I'll follow your lead and try letting them ripen longer before tasting them next time.

I now have 6 Goji Berry plants, two of which are from cuttings I made last fall. All are in different stages of growth. The first one I have had for two years and is in a 5 gallon decorative pot in my back landscape and the other five are in the ground. All are looking great, especially with the 7 inches of rain we've had the last two weeks. So hopefully I will have fruit this year.

BTW, @dave all of the Jujube's leaves started popping this morning!! And I had blossums on my two cherry trees this week.

I had read last week that gojis grown as a commercial crop in the US aren't having a lot of success. Has anyone read the same? I was wondering why.

For those of you in zone 8, do gojiberries go dormant for you or are they semi dormant or fully dormant?

Carole,
I searched for Goji Berry and here you are with the information I need :o)

Matthew,
Good info.

Twitcher,
I'm also zone 5. Invasive how? By seedlings, runners?
I bought some of the dried fruit and was not impressed with the taste. I also wondered if they were from China and they were very expensive. I'd grow them for the health aspects tho.

Hmm, maybe it's better to read about them than plant them, lol!

Sally - Green Grin! I planted them for the health benefits too. The one I have is self-fertile.

Mine are still going strong. Due to my DH's illness I haven't been able to do much gardening the past couple of years. The plants are supposed to root where the branches touch the ground and can spread to become a dense thicket. I think mine have rooted where they touch the soil but we're under a light blanket of snow right now so that's not visible.

Carole,
I can't have things that spread and am not sure I can keep them under control. That's why I don't have the Seaberry (Hippophae rhamnoides) My SIL has them, all over... They do taste orangy.

Yes, we gave to grow what is right for our climate and what we can manage. So far, so good with my Goji. I had been wanting to try Barberries so I finally ordered some dried ones to keep in the freezer.

Sally,
I am in your same zone and have not found the gojiberries to get out of control . Yes, I have dug 3 plants that came up from runners but they were welcome and I just replanted them nearer the mother plant.
I seems like if you did not want root runners a little pruning mid summer would keep this from happening.
To do this you just take a sharp spade and slice straight down into the ground about 12'' from the base of the mother plant.

As for taste I think I may have previously responded that they are not unplesent but also not too desireable in mu opinion. I grow them for their healthful qualities.

Cinda,
I bought some to try, and no, was not impressed. I would only do it for the healthy aspect also. I thought the Seaberry tasted better, but my SIL has them, and baby trees galore growing up.
I don't have a good place to plant runners. I would really rather have raspberries.

We have wild blackberries here. I love to go blackberry picking. My neighbor has blueberries and usually brings me a big container every year. I grew some for awhile but mine were in containers and I had to get rid of them.

Different strokes for different folks. Thank goodness for that.

I used to be able to walk over to the RR tracks and eat blackberries and wild cherries. There are old old black raspberry canes on the corner in the wild brush, and over at the Church, along with mulberries and more wild cherries. I do get to graze a little on my walks, lol!

Reading through this thread has made me rethink my decision to order a goji berry last fall from our
county extension office. It sits now in its pot on my driveway and when I checked it a few minutes
ago, the pot is full of little goji berry sprouts. So I need to find a new home for it with someone who
has , A, a huge piece of land and, B, has a spot where it can run rampant. Certainly that is not my
situation! I don't want to lose what little garden I have to goji berries! Be gone, GB!

Angie,
That made me laugh! But it sure would be great to have a lot of land to let them spread if they wanted to.

Carole,
I'm still on the fence because I really don't have any extra room. If they were delicious I'd re-think it.

I'm not recommending anyone plant them, just reporting on my experience. They're not my favorite berry by any means. But they are healthy. I'm just surprised mine haven't spread much even though I have room for them to do so.
