You can always make a firm or even hard mattress softer but you can never make a soft mattress harder.

We didn't get a soft mattress; but it had quite a pillow top on it. It was guaranteed for 10 years. By the time 1.5/2 years had rolled around we had valleys where each of us slept. We had gotten it locally at a strictly mattress/bed store that was not a nationwide chain but locally owned even though they have several locations within 100 mi. radius. I called, talked with the owner & he had zero problem with changing it out for us. We just had to pick what we wanted this time around. We were just switching the mattress. He pointed out what I said above which is the way we were thinking but he confirmed. We got a "no frills" ie: no pillow top extra firm. It was a bit hard I have to say. I got a mattress topper for it & it's perfect. It added just that bit of cushioning we needed without overdoing it. I can replace the topper as many times as I feel we need to but to change the mattress itself is a whole different ball of wax. Still, I know this mattress isn't going to hold up another 8 years and they aren't going to replace it again.

I have to say they just don't make them like they used to; I don't care which brand you get. The dh & I have decided when this mattress goes we will go get the cheapest, hardest mattress out there that we can find & get a new mattress every few years if need be & put toppers on them. We are sick about spending $1,000 for something you know is not going to hold up. I would rather spend under $300 & do it 3 times in 10 years.

25 years ago we got a Beautyrest by Simmons -- the top of their line at the time. My parents had one & we went by what they said about it. Mom said it was easily the best money they ever spent. She was right. We LOVED ours!!!!! It is a pillowtop on both sides & we flipped & rotated it regularly. A seriously excellent bed!!!! We still have it. It's now in the guest room. If it were a king instead of a queen it would be in the master BR in a HEARTBEAT! That bed has held up fantastic for 25 years & is still going strong.

I had that beautyrest and it was the best mattress.
Marilyn, if you go to a dedicated store and pick out your fav and it is cheaper ...then go to sears with your coupon... You tell them ( sears) that you LOVE sears but want them to give you a better deal. The will...THEN drag out that coupon. Don't feel bad...they want you to do that! They are still making money

Rosie is right. Just make sure you don't drag out that coupon until after you've made the deal like Rosie says.

They got it all figured out...every which way. They will get the most but if you press for a deal else you are going to Sleepys or wherever...they will deal.

Our ONE dedicated 'MATTRESS KING' store (where I got the present mattress) has gone under ..
But, there are other stores that deal in mattresses .

Like you all .. it GALLS me to pay that much for a MATTRESS !!! Guess the powers that be know everyone HAS to sleep, and, with the population aging (GAG) .. they know we'll pay to lay down those aches n pains ..

NOW .. if I would just STOP procrastinating Shrug! and get on with it .. I'd be able to see what I am up against ..
The weather sure isn't helping .. 4" of snow overnight last night .. H E A V Y stuff!!

Gee, when we bought ours we just went to the local place, laid on a whole passel of them, on one we looked at each other and said "yeahhhhhhhhhh............this is it". What does it cost? Hmmm............more than we wanted to spend, but I can't make a mattress of the money and be comfortable. When can you deliver the whole works? Next Saturday. Fine, see ya then.

Anna -- we did the same.. But not as lucky...it turned on us. What felt good in the store...was way too firm at home. It was $2700 for the mattress and low profile boxspring. Then sears wanted to charge restock and insisted we live with it fot 90 days because some mattress guru said that is what it takes. That was not going to work for me ... The mattress we got a week later ( no restock ) was a 1/3 less and we love it. And, no delivery charge. I think Sears forgot who the customer was for a short minute.

We were lucky enough to find one for less money but "sleeps" the same as the Reverie for the RV. We were going to get one from where we bought our "house" one , but, gads, just the mattress was a grand. The RV place had just started selling those mattresses that we bought one of and we're sure glad we did. They told us that most everyone changes out the mattress, so they put cheap crap in. And it was that for sure. LOL

I dis-assembled it and was able to use the foam pads (that's all the master BR RV one was) for one of the other beds in the RV (which was nothing more than a large, quilted "pad") and the other one I cut in half, glued it, and put it up in the loft of the RV for that "bed". So, technically it wasn't "wasted", and we got a wonderful, comfy one for our master BR in the RV.

The biggest difference between mattresses then and now is the foam. Then it was latex foam. Now it's polyurethane foam. It breaks down is 4 to 5 years. I've read that the major manufacturers use what is termed junk foam-not the highest quality.
The old latex foam mattresses lasted until the fabric rotted off.
Latex foam is still available but costs more and is sold by specialty shops and online.

When we lived in Europe we had a Latex mattress, the brand was Dunlopillo. It was the best mattress I ever slept on. When I do a search for that brand here I don't get a hit, but I found this - not a bad price by comparison:

Ours has foam (?? Type) gel, springs, individual, wrapped, tied, scalloped, boiled and filleted, and a fabric padding.. Layers like a lasagna! All hype probably. Hahahaha

Jeeze .. that Latex one sounds wonderful ..

As someone said .. way back at the beginning of this thread .. ALL mattresses are pretty much alike, a different name is just sewn on before they are sold ..

Man .. this whole experience has my knickers in a wad Shrug!
I look at the sales sharks like I would a used car salesperson .. not believing, and second guessing .. not wanting to get shafted.
Too bad you can't hire a person with lotsa chutzpa to get in there and do it for you .. I am such a wuss .
My BFF, Lorna is coming with as my 'negotiator' .. and, it looks as though the BIG day will be this Friday ..

I bet you will find one right away and be thrilled. Your buddy will do fine. Remind her that these guys want to be heros! And, truly, they won't go below what they are allowed to.

Guess who bought a king sized BeautyRest with a European Tight Top ????
TA DA .. me and .. I SCORED a great deal Thumbs up
Regular $2300. Got it for $1900. MINUS my $400. in coupons at Sears .. final cost was about $1300... taxes, delivery, take the old one away ..

Did you know mattresses, like cars, come out yearly ? The one I bought is a 2016 BRest .. there were 2 2015s but no kings in them ..

Being delivered on March 16th ... now I just have to get under the bed and clean .. going to be a challenge as the bed has the lion's share of the room ..
Gonna be a lotta grunting and groaning going on .. Shrug!

SO glad that is done with .. now .. on to TAXES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just thought about you yesterday but did not ask ..thought being snowed in, might be impossible. So HAPPY for you. And remember if you do not like it.. Don't you pay a restock fee..pitch a fit ...and don't let them hold you to keeping it a set amount of time.

The sales woman tried her best to sell me an extended dealy do .. $200... gotta tell ay .. I can write lotsa hate mail(if necessary) if something goes wrong . ..
To be truthful, I am insurance poor with all our appliances.. we fork out about $500./yr for fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, washer dryer.
BUT .. it only took ONE poker chip stuck in the washers motor to make $500. seem small !!! Totally pooched the motor .. woulda been $800.++ with NO insurance ..

Feeling OH SO good that a new mattress is on its way .. AND .. that 'HUMP" phenomenon is called 'KING CROWNING ..sales lady said to turn the mattress a quarter turn every so often .. NEVER flip it over .. OOPS .. Confused Blinking

Will post a pic when it arrives Smiling

We have been saved many a time by appliance insurance. But there is a tipping point when after a certain age, SEARS goes nuts with its insurance costs.. Can buy a new washer with the cost of insuring one with some age on it.
