Background history:

'Firestorm' is a dormant diploid introduced in 1979 by William Krekler. Additional information about the hybridizer was not found.

Firestorm is an early to mid-season bloomer and possible bud builder. It has earned the following Honorable Mention: 2009 AHS award. It is both pod and pollen fertile with 19 registered children: http://garden.org/plants/paren...

This plant can be found in the ATP Plant Database at:
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Firestorm') .

Please join in, if you own this plant! We would love to know more! I award an acorn for performance information posted to this thread.

Also, please consider adding a "Local Report" to the ATP Plant Database! Thank you!

Firestorm was a non-performer for me last year even though it was planted in full sun and given regular drinks of water. I have not had a chance to witness its blooms as a result.

I HAVE, however, seen this in bloom at another Michigan gardener's place and it had multiple poly blooms which were extraordinary!

Here is one I took a picture of and posted to the database:

It's brilliant in person and is a LARGE bloom size, which I love, so this flower really makes an impact.

Because it isn't performing in my garden, I'm reluctant to recommend it, but it DID grow well in the MI garden north of here, so I'll simply say that it's beautiful and anyone who can grow it will likely be glad they did.

I've had FIRESTORM for 4 years and it does well in this Zone 4 garden. I haven't hybridized with it, but though it's been around a while, it's a nice bright UF garden flower, a good performer with good increase. A keeper for me.

I do not have this daylily, but I did get some seeds (from Cynthia's generosity here at ATP I tip my hat to you. ). The cross she gave was Firestorm X Pink Cricket. So far, 7 of 8 (year old seeds) have germinated and are growing). I hope some of the babies look like Firestorm. It's a lovely daylily.

I have had Firestorm for l0 years and it is a very good performer in my garden. Stats are pretty accurate here although I think it blooms more in the mid season range rather than early. It sets pods very easily, increases well, and blooms for over a month.

With all of the poly pictures in the database, I really wish we knew the parentage of this flower. Does anyone know much about Krekler's daylilies or have a way of determining what the parentage of this flower is somehow? The AHS didn't list the cross (no surprise, or it would've been in ATP's database, too) when I looked earlier, and my very brief Googling just now would seem to show the hybridizer's full name is William Krekler, but I would need to spend a little more time researching to confirm that.

If anyone else is able to chime in, though, it would be neat to see if this one is a random mutation poly'er or if there are some clear poly genetics in it's ancestry that could be pointed to.

Thanks! I added the first name as William. I, too, would love to have more information to add to the initial post about this hybridizer.

I see I have not posted my experience with this plant, and it deserves recognition. A great plant that i have had perhaps 20 years. It always blooms well. It sets pods well, but I have not had any seedling that improved on Firestorm. Highly recommend it.
