I agree with those of you who feel that the scale and form of historics lend themselves to blending with other plants in the garden..
Some of my favorite Historics:

'Father Rigney' is velvety, regal, reliable. This was a bonus from Exline some years back, and I'm so glad he chose this one to send.

Same reasons for 'The Red Douglas'... Looks great with saturated yellows.

'Blue Shimmer' is possibly my favorite plicata. It's very sharp looking. I've got it growing with a sweet little polyantha rose, and in front of silver foliage.

A neighbor shared 'Quaker Lady' with me about 15 years ago, and got my interest going with Historics. Every year it's just covered in blooms. Makes quite an impact in the garden.

'Prairie Sunset' is another one that is covered in blooms. Looks great with CA poppies, calendulas..

'Easter Bonnet' is just so unbelievably lovely..

I won "Best in Class" with 'Confetti' at our show this year. The form is so graceful... The stalks look like someone made an arrangement.. They are just so symmetrical and perfect.

I like the different colored shoulders on Father Rigney. May have to get that one.

Tom, that bit of warmth at the shoulders makes Father Rigney really special looking doesn't it! I planted that one near plants with bronzy foliage in hopes of accentuating that bit of color.

Just noticed the red on Father Rigney's shoulders. It shows up well enlarged.

Okay, you enablers! I'm new to the iris world, and I've just spent I don't know how long drooling over the eight pages in this post. You've given me a terrible "I want" feeling!! I'm about to have a large raised bed built for the excessive daylilies I've ordered...now I know just exactly what to do with the rest of the space! And then I can have another bed built.... Oh, my! Yes, I am a novice and I got bit by iris bug this year. So I bought quite a few of them and planted them in my iris bed that gets good drainage as it is on a hill and I also amended my clay soil with compost, lime and gypsum and tilled it. It gets full sun. I can't wait to see some blooms this spring 2018. I enjoyed reading everyone's post and input as I ge to learn some from all of you iris experts. I want to thank everyone for sharing their iris knowledge on this website Smiling
