Water Rooting Your Cuttings

By Horseshoe
August 31, 2011

When rooting your cuttings in water, remember they’ll need adapting to soil when the time is right. Water-rooted cuttings grow roots suited for water but they’ll need to grow "soil roots" for best health when potting up. Help them along by adding soil to your water as you witness root growth coming on.

Wow! Those are great! I love it!

What an interesting wine bottle on the far left (of the left side pic). Never saw one like that before.

Thanks for posting the pics. I bet you'll get others to start collecting "water rooters" now (not to be confused with rotor rooters, Folks!).

Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing I bet there are probably some folks out there who do indeed collect Rotor Rooters! Big Grin

Re: The wine bottles ... They were left by tenants who moved out of my sister & brother's in law's rental property a few years ago. My sister was getting ready to throw them out and I told her I wanted them! I particularly liked the shape of that one on the left. Someone suggested using them for candles, letting the wax drip down the sides of the bottles as was popular in the 60's and 70's. I figured I'd use them as garden art, but ended up using them to root house plant cuttings.

Horseshoe..I don't have acess to a willow tree. Can you buy this willow tea anywhere? You mentioned it needs to be green softwood, not the dried hardwood..when you say green softwood, does that refer to the branches when the willow tree is just starting to show green in the spring? My former neighbor where we used to live had a willow tree and I could get some twigs from them..if I would remember it next Spring. Let me makes sure I understand how you make the willow tea solution. You cut the green softwood stems(whatever you call them), and you boil water in a pot and pour over the willow pieces, cover it and let it steep in that hot water for how long? You don't boil the willow in the pot of water on the stove, right? Do you strip the bark off the willow stem first? The boiling water won't stay hot for very long, does that make a difference in the steeping process or do you have to keep changing water? Duh! Sure would be easier if this can be purchased commerically.

Where do you buy those pretty rooting containers that you can hang up from the ceiling?

Thanks Vic. The little lantern was a bathroom soap dispenser and when the pump part broke I threw it away and used the jar part for rooting. The one on the right with the beads was a thrift store purchase.

Pippi: You should check out your local thrift stores for colorful jars/vases to use for plant rooters ... oh, and yard sales too! If it's not made for hanging you can wind a think wire around the neck and form the end into a loop for hanging!

Pippi...
In the thread on willow water I posted easy to understand instructions.
http://garden.org/thread/view_...

I imagine we should keep all the "willow talk" over there in one area so it all stays grouped together for easy referral and reading. If you still have questions post them in that thread and I'll certainly answer every single one. Or at least try to! :>)

Best,
Shoe
