This Thread was solved By Danita as Freesia viridis.

I've made an inquiry to the seller but I thought this might ring a bell with someone here. These just bloomed today and was just going to photograph the buds only to discover this rather disappointing flower. I'll get a better photo if it'll help.

Doesn't look like any Ixia I've ever grown.

It's a cute little flower but I don't think the name is right. Have you heard back from the seller?

I'm not sure how long or if they will respond. They don't really have a way to contact them via email but I used a backchannel email they used when a previous order was not quite right. I'm hoping that will work. If not, I'm going on a buying trip to them next month, I'll ask in person. Perhaps the other fans with it will produce a match with the label. They are all pushing up flower stalks. I tip my hat to you.

I did hear back and this is what she says..."HI Leslie,
I’m not sure if the Ixia longituba bellandenii ‘Peach’ color can vary so much that it comes up yellow." and then a second
e-mail.."HI Leslie, I’m happy to help. I just spoke to one of our propagators who described that the bulbs we grow sometimes come mislabeled or have other varieties mixed in from our suppliers. May be by the time you visit you’ll have more blooms to reference when talking to our retail team." I had explained that we will be there for a shopping spree in March and that there were other fans pushing up flowers. I'll post more photos as they all come to full bloom and take a few macros too. Such small flowers on this one and I don't find anything like it. Still looking. I'm curious too. My #1 emoticon is the WTWT. I had to ask whats that for the WTWT! Rolling on the floor laughing I did laugh and laugh at the irony. So fitting for me. I tip my hat to you.

Isn't that special. They sell named plants but can't actually guarantee that they sent what you bought. Hmmmm.... Grumbling

It doesn't have an Ixia flower and the flowers aren't on Ixia-like flower stems. Ixia were weed plants in the part of California I came from. Those aren't Ixia.

I have to go put cold water on my face now.

Several more fans bloomed and there all the same. The entire plant and inflorescence are about five inches tall and the flowers as you can see are long but not very wide. It'll be out of here after I find out what it is. Its in a premium spot a corner in front. You have to get down on your knees and then bend over to see these flowers! You can see all the stages of blooming here. There all facing away from the sun and into the bed. Odd.

You might have a rare plant! Notice the very long 'throat', it's almost like an orchid.

If you don't want it I'm sure someone here would gladly take it off you so please don't discard it, I think it's interesting.

I've been going through the genera in Iridaceae, some Lapeirousia species have a long throat.

I'll keep it until it's identified for sure. After that it's likely that it won't stay in this public garden. Just not right for this public garden even though I love unusual plants. It's so tiny too. I still need to get a clearer shot of the flower. It's overcast so I may do that today. Thanks for the links. I tip my hat to you.

How about Anomatheca viridis?

You made my day Danita and it's only 720AM. Thank You, I guess it can stay in the garden as a novelty. I tip my hat to you.

I skipped over Freesia, or rather I checked out species on google images from silverhillseeds but they don't have it, it doesn't resemble Freesia. Rolling my eyes.

http://www.silverhillseeds.co....

is quite a collector's plant. It is found on stony clay and limestone in the north and south western Cape of South Africa, and flowers appear very early from late winter into spring. This curiosity must have a warm, sheltered rock garden or be grown in a pot to be viewed close-up

I'm glad you found it Danita, now I'm tempted to buy seeds. Hilarious! I've tried growing many South African bulbs from seed, some grew well and I got flowers on a few, but cold summers and winters when we get them, which is often, eventually makes it a difficult job to keep them alive.

That made my day, as well! My first thought was freesia when I saw the foliage, but I couldn't find any that matched the bloom.

Yes, Freesia was were I went also but, as you have all pointed out, its a weird Freesia. And I'm especially happy it isn't destined for the compost pile. I was going to volunteer to drive down to Sacramento and adopt it from you.

The accepted name is Freesia viridis but Anomatheca viridis is such a better name. Another synonym is Lapeirousia viridis. Smiling

I've decided to move it into our highest walled plots which are along the road at about four feet high for easy observation. I'll wait till they go dormant of course. I can see the the ovaries swelling already. I have no idea how it gets pollinated. The honey bees are active but I never see them at any of the freesias. I'll try to get better photos for th DB but it's been a bit challenging. I'll have to have a lie down and get comfy. Not something you really want to do at a cemetery. Angel Raining today. Well, it made my day that it made your day! Green Grin!

The author of the website linked below is clearly unimpressed with the plant but does offer the useful observation, " It appears to be self-fertile and sets generous amounts of seed - to the point where it can become a greenhouse weed. "
