I think white flowered Salpiglossis is going to be my newest obsession. Does any one have seeds for a white cultivar, or even seeds collected from a white flowered one that grew from a mix?
If you do let me know what you are interested in so we can try to work a trade.
Thanks! Alana

Do you mean the ground orchid Spathoglottis? I saw photos of one awhile back called 'White Angel' and it was really pretty but I've never seen white varieties for sale anywhere around my area. If you obtain seeds, I hope you will keep us posted on how they do for you! I found it in our database Ground Orhid (Spathoglottis 'White Angel') but no photos and no listings yet of members who might have it.

No, nothing so exotic, but thank you for responding. That does sound lovely.
I am looking for ordinary Salpiglossis sinuata (Painted Tongue).

Alana I don't think I've ever seen a white one .. cream color in a mix but not a white one.

I had seeds of these but like a fool I gave them away in a swap (probably the Beta Swap). It was the only salpiglossis to survive a squirrel attack and bloomed pitifully but did make a few seeds. Several people got seeds so maybe they will share?

Alana, I see you mean the species, like the pictures I posted on the PDB.

Unfortunately, those pictures were taken some 10 years ago, when I still lived in Santiago, and access to The Andes mountains was easy by car (way to the ski centres). Now I live at the countryside and it would be 3+ hours drive each way, which I can no longer take since I am not aging graciously (last diagnose added was gout).

However, I remember having seen Salpiglossis growing on the roadside in the Central Valley where I live and I'll be alert should I make a tour, to see if I can collect some seeds for you.

bxncbx, story of my life. I never wanted it so much as when I have just given it away, lol.

Mutsia, that is very kind of you! I'm beginning to become a breathing ruin myself.

In the meantime, I'm on the hunt. I might buy a mix that includes white or near white, too, and try to grow out some to select for white.
I don't know if it was a fever dream or real, but just on the edge of memory I have convinced myself that I once saw a cultivar called Royal White, or something very like that.

Alana, the pictures of white Salpiglossis in your link do not look like the ones I have posted at ATP's PDB. Their picture was probably taken at the same location, or a similar one, it's the roadside on the way to Santiago's ski centres. A lot of people interested in flora visit those sites because of their easy access. If I wanted to visit the Andes from where I live, I would have to rent a helicopter, because I would not want to kill any mule with my excess weight LOL.

There is a lot of interesting native flora where I live now, but because of a serious draught (over 7 years now), rabbits and other rodents (I hate to say rats and mice) eat the whole plants before any seeds get to ripen.

I know I traded white Salpiglossis many years ago (whe the pictures were taken) at DG - I also sold lots of seeds on that site to finance a 'pay forward' project that probably included them. I no longer visit DG, but who knows, maybe you can ask if somebody has propagated them and has seeds to trade? At that time I also sold or traded a lot of our native seeds to Annie's Annuals, but do not remember if this white Salpiglossis was among them.

Thanks Ronnie! That was one of the fastest seed searches I've undertaken. They do have it. It is a good thing there is no work today. I'm going to have to spend some time selecting a travel partner or two. Can't have those making the trip all alone. Hilarious!
