***UPDATE***

It's not Canna ... it's Smilax bona nox. I potted up one that looked like it was putting on new growth and what was coming out was very uncanna like so I dug up one of the Smilax that was growing in my yard and found the rhizomes. No wonder this stuff is so hard to get rid of!

Thanks Janet! I believe you're right! It's been over a decade since I grew canna (got tired of fighting leaf rollers) and switched to gingers - I guess I forgot what they looked like! Funny, I didn't notice any canna in the hump last Summer .. may have been buried to deep.

I haven't grown any Cannas for a few years either, cold winters made it too hard to keep them alive even in a cold greenhouse and I can't be bothered lifting them. I've just been canna hunting, ho hum. Hilarious!

I enjoyed Cannas more when I had to overwinter them. Where I am now, the leaf rollers are relentless. And Cannas never stop creeping. They must have a hard barrier & a place to themselves.

Canna Lily - Tiffany is right they can get out of hand real quick! When I had them it only took 2 years for them to over run a bed. My favorites were Bengal Tiger and Chocolate Cherry.

Since Janet had ID'd it, I didn't even make the pic bigger. It does look like a baby Smilax. The bona-nox species has variegated leaves. The leaves in the pic in question don't look variegated to me but may be hard to tell with the damage.

The addition (substitution) of a photo of leaves makes all the difference! It would have been a good idea to leave the original photo?

BTW, canna rhizomes was only a suggestion, not a definite ID.

Hey Janet .. no problem! I think you are absolutely amazing! They didn't have leaves when they were first dug up ... and your right about leaving the original photo .. I'll see if I can find it.
