I don't know why but they called it "hairy" bittercress.
With three male dogs, "I ain't going to taste it" either. But it is a pretty weed.

I found a packet of seeds from last year and am planting them tomorrow. I can't wait to watch them grow!

About propagating purslane, I planted seeds of the Golden Purslane in pots and quite a few came up, but would've liked to see more than that come up. That's an especially tasty one and not available in nurseries (that I know of), so has to be started by seed. And the wild Lebanese purslane...just threw some seed on the ground in the fall and had some come up as soon as it was warm enough the next year. Have rooted cuttings also...shared those with a friend for ornamental purslane. Easy...it's good to start some cuttings in spring, then they'll have time to get going before summer. My only problem was that the wild critters came and dug in a couple of pots...saved what I could!

Hmm, lots of posts, no mention about planting seeds. (never mind me, I'm a curmudgeon!)

I have a lot of Adeniums, sometimes called.Desert Roses. One is planted in mostly perlite. I sprinkled a whole packet of double portulaca seeds around the edge of the pot. They ALL sprouted! Wa! Looks rather like a beard right now. Am wondering when to attempt moving, or maybe transplanting. Sheesh, there are hundreds! Photo coming in a day or two.

Since they come up easy, it should be fairly easy to transplant....

Hmmm, there was a place about seeds when we are at cubits. Wonder where it went?

Well, I have tried seeds twice and they don't work as well for me. Only about 1/4 came up and they never really took off. Have you had any luck, Melissa? I'd really LOVE for seeds to work!

First time with seeds in recent memory. Um, the seeds I planted, in perlite that had settled into the pot for a few weeks, seem to have all sprouted. They are still teenie tiny, just getting thweir first leaves, about 1/2 an inch tall. Jammed together like no tomorrow.

I would plant more, as soon as I get more seeds. In a tray this time, of 100% perlite, maybe two inches deep. Wet the perlite first, then with a dropper(coke bottle with a hole punched in the top), one drop of water on any seeds that show on the top of the bits of perlite, to wash them down into the perlite.

I have a big nail and a candle, I heat the nail with the candle flame to use as a hole punch.

OK

No, double portulaca.

I want companion plants for my (too many!) Adeniums.

Thought I'd mention one thing...I use seeds for certain kinds of purslane, like the tasty Golden Purslane. But years ago, I had some pretty cultivated purslane in a pot and for years afterward some of the seeds that scattered nearby came up. Well, it eventually turned out that after a while, the volunteer purslanes no longer had the color of the original plant and I believe they reverted to a wild kind of purslane, with the very small yellow flowers. So if you use seed for cultivated purslane, maybe it would be better to buy the seed or use cuttings so it will be the same plant.

good point, Linda.

I bought the Rio Purslane (Hot Pink) from Park seeds. It was $4.85 or something like that and I only received a dozen seeds. None came up. I'm not the best seed person but I sure have other plants grow from seeds. So for now, I am sticking with a plant and cuttings.

Just found some of my propagation photos.
I just stuck a few cuttings in the ground on 6-28-2010

Thumb of 2011-07-17/Boopaints/9fe15b

Here it is, same place, about a month later. I hate Bermuda grass and had an idea the purslane would choke it out. The Bermuda won. Thumbs down

from further away

Thumb of 2011-07-17/Boopaints/f411ea

And I stuck a bunch of cuttings in this basket and it grew well!
