Very cold hardy -- grows outdoors in the ground here with no problem -- easily cultivated -- growing in 2" square plastic pot -- clusters freely -- very floriferous in late winter/early spring.

Very nice. I wish they would grow in the ground here. Sighing! It's too cold and wet.

I hear you Deebie -- its the wet part that gets 'em!

Note:

Although my user name is attached to the database photograph I did not load it up and attach that name to it. The name that I attribute to this plant is Echinocereus viridiflorus var. davisii which is the name now generally accepted.

I agree

But it is still listed as E. davisii on CoL which is what they follow here... Initially my search appeared to show me something else, but I had managed to click myself to a different website....

Thank you.

Of course, in the not too distant future, many (maybe most) of the database plant names here will have been superseded by new nomenclature and will seem quaint. In my seventy five years of growing cacti I have lived through so many classification/nomenclature schemes:
Britton & Rose, Berg, Backeberg, Hunt, Taylor & Zappi, et al.

If I had a dollar for every time I have changed names (or added synonyms) on plant labels I would have a lot of money by now. Of course, the big problem is we humans want to neatly classify and categorize plants according to our own concepts -- but nature will not play by our rules. It doesn't really matter that much to me -- I adapt to whatever nomenclature my individual correspondents currently use -- most of it will change eventually anyway.

What I really hope to avoid is for one of my posted photos to be captioned with a name that I did not intend to accompany it thus making the nomenclature at odds with that I use on my reference web pages.

I subscribe to the attribution nomenclature of "The Plant List" so I think it best my photos not be uploaded to the Forum database.

It was not me who associated them with the E. davisii name, I feel people who upload their photos should make the decision themselves whether or not to associate them with a database entry. I even tried to get the name changed to what we both think it should be, but was turned down. I realize the utility of following a specific scheme or list and stick to it, but unfortunately these generic all encompassing lists rarely have been compiled by people who are experts in all the plants families they get asked to curate. So despite the list being quoted as updated in 2016, the actual reference used stems from 2000... I am sure it is tough to keep those lists current.
I guess my attitude is (or will be from now on) that I will upload pictures to the plant database if the entry has the correct name and not worry about trying to get things that I know to be wrong, right.
It is what it is!

I can't keep up with all of these name changes. Each site I look at has a different name for a plant I'm researching.

You can go to your profile and click on site preferences. Then you can allow or disallow others to add your photos to the database. If you do that, no one will be able to add your photos to the database.

You can also ask to have a picture removed.
I'm sorry if my action of adding your great pictures to the database has upset you, James. I will refrain from doing so in the future.

I understand your motivation Hetty and I am not at all upset by your actions. What I am trying to achieve is to have consistent nomenclature for the captions that accompany my plant photographs whether they are on my web pages or on Forums such as this (it is a struggle) because that avoids a lot of feedback explanations for me.

I am late to the conversation but would like to add a few things.

The pictures are amazing and quite informative. Thank you, James.

Karen, thank you for the info about disabling the database adds through our profile. The reason why I turned that setting off (personally) is that I have lots of pictures of some plants and only want the best ones (which I want to choose) to be in the database.

Finally, James, I understand your concern about lack of concordance with names. I personally find these databases extremely annoying some times. And the way they affect plant names here at ATP can sometimes be problematic. Anyway, two comments if I may.

First, your photos will reach more eyes and have a greater lasting impact if you make them part of the plant database (eventually). Which of course is your call but I speak as a user when I urge you to populate the ATP database with as many of your cactus pictures as possible. Thumbs up

Second, there is a mechanism by which names can be changed in the database here, ie. "corrected" to agree with the most current name. They follow the CoL but will entertain the use of other names if you provide a good justification (like a link or source or a very specific reason). Since you and Thijs apparently agree in the case of this particular cactus, perhaps compelling evidence could be presented to change its name in the database.

I recommend contacting @zuzu directly for fastest resolution of these matters, because they aren't going to change names against what's listed in the CoL without you delivering a strong justification.

Point is, if the name is wrong in the ATP database, it doesn't have to stay that way. Smiling

Thank you for your well thought out input Baja. I agree with everything you say. I want to add that the main reason I favor "The Plant List"
so much is the way it addresses synonyms -- extensively and with excellent cross references. I find that so helpful in nomenclature discussions with fellow enthusiasts.

PS: I try to append as many acceptable synonyms to my plant names as possible -- I will try to do a better job of that.

James
