This summer I scattered portulaca seeds in an old bird bath that was cracked and by golly, before I knew it they had germinated and taken off. They were absolutely beautiful and I will plant them again in 2011, already have my seed purchased. At one of the public libraries, I saw a sold color of hot pink portulacas..instead of the mixed colors. Do you have any idea what company sells the solid color ones?

Hi Pippi!
Sounds like a beautiful display. I have purchased what I thought would be a solid colored plant only to find it popped out many colors daily. I was kind of sad but then enjoyed the variety once I got over it. lol.

Maybe Google portulaca and you'll find a grower that offers a solid color!

Hi all,
I've always liked portulaca - so bright and so durable. When I was a child, it would reseed itself in the cracks of the sidewalk and bloom there all summer.

I've had a large bright pink portulaca for a few years now. It never produces seed so I bring it inside and take cuttings every winter.

LOVE that great hot pink, Tabby~ I like it when it is tucked into crevices too. Glad yo know it reseeds sometimes.\\When you take a cutting do you need to root it or just plunk it in the dirt like we do with purslane?

I'm very familiar with purslane but not as much with portulaca....

The portulaca I pictured never reseeds. I was referring to the regular old variety of portulaca from 50 years ago that reseeded everywhere.

The one I pictured is bigger than the common variety. I wonder if it is some kind of hybrid. Or maybe the perennial kind mentioned a while back in this thread. When I root it, I just stick some in potting soil in a pot, but keep it inside or under shade since we normally have very low humidity.
Although, it can't be lower than Phoenix. Smiling

Golly, it's nice to see a forum dedicated to Portulaca and Purslane. Don't see that very often. I grew a ton of Portulacas in CA but not so much here in TN. Well, slight exaggeration about the ton ... but I did grow a lot of them. Now I always have to have some of them here too ... if nothing else to remind me of my CA days. Sigh! I personally think they are gorgeous. And now I see that I need to get more Purslane. Lovey dubby

About the hot pink, in the first post here--I have some, it's more of a fuscha, and there's a double white also. They are completely frilly, will take some photos when they are in bloom. They don't bloom constantly.
