Hi There

I hope everyone is having a great new Spring season! Just curious if anyone has any seeds to share for interesting Cacti and Succulents that are cold hardy? I am in zone 8 and looking to get started as I haven't grown any of these types before.

Thank you!

Kim

Hurray!

Where in Zone 8 are you? It would be helpful to know that. There are a lot of cactus that will grow outside in Zone 8 in California. Maybe not so much if your Zone 8 gets a lot of rain.

You may have better luck asking this question at the other end of summer. I had a lot of seeds last fall but they are long gone. If I find a couple, I will let you know.

Thank you Daisy! I am in Vancouver BC. There is quite a lot of rain in the fall but last year it was sunny pretty much all Summer months. Thanks for your help and would love to hear if anyone has any extra seeds laying around! Smiling :) Hurray!

Welcome!
Come join us on the regular cactus and succulent forum. There are several people there that can provide you with lots of info because they are seed traders and propagators. Once you 'meet' them, I'm sure they'll follow you back over here so you guys can discuss the specifics and particulars. Green Grin!

Happy spring

Welcome!

I don't have any seeds for cold tolerant succulents but hopefully someone else can help there. It may be a serious challenge for you to grow even cold tolerant succulents outside in Vancouver, given the kind of winter rain you guys get. The really dangerous conditions are not cold alone but cold and wet combined, even worse cold and wet and dark. I know what winters are like in the Pacific NW after spending a few years there. Smiling But if you have a sunny windowsill or similar then overwintering indoors should be quite easy.

Bear in mind that many cacti make tiny seeds which require years of nursing along under pampered conditions before they would be ready for the outdoors. (Again, that windowsill works great.) You will get off to a much quicker start if you can find a cutting (for example a pad from a prickly pear) that you can root... ready in weeks or months instead. Thumbs up

Thank you for your words of help all.. Baja_Costero we have an indoor nursery for our plants until it is warm enough to put them outside. My Uncle when he was alive had several cacti that he grew in his backyard and when it rained he put large covers on them. I have grown succulents before with no problem. Just looking for some seeds again so I can enjoy the beauty of these plants once more. Thanks for your advice about getting a prickly pear cutting but I am in Canada and you can't send live plants from outside of Canada or receive them. Just seeds. Hurray!

Legally and practically only CITES appendix II cactus species. You actually can send CITES appendix I cactus seeds internationally but the procedure and paperwork is really formidable!

Again, legally, Phytosanitary certificates are required for all International mailings of cactus seeds.
