Since we're already into March, I thought it might be time to begin a 2016 thread. Whistling

Welcome to all who love wildflowers! Welcome!
Please join us in our appreciation and feel free to post photos or comments. Photos don't have to be of wildflowers growing in your yard, they can be from anywhere.

We came from here:
The thread "SE USA wildflowers, 2015" in Wildflowers forum

I changed the thread to include all of the North American continent instead of just the SE USA, so we don't exclude our northern, central or western wildflower aficionados.

The photo above is of Goldfinches on Rumex acetosella otherwise known as Red Sorrel. There are 9 Goldfinches on the Rumex stems in the photo. Can you find them all? The small seed eating birds go crazy around this time of year eating the ripened seed of these plants.

Here is the plant in our database:
Sheep's Sorrel (Rumex acetosella)

Thank you for the new thread, Ann. Smiling

Jay, those are pretty spider lilies. Someone gave me one about five years ago. I've had it in a pot all this time but it's never flowered.

Is white clover a native there or has it been introduced?

I think white clover is a native.

edit: Okay, I thought it was a native but I just checked and it's from Europe and Asia, so it is Introduced.

Good call, Caroline.

Here's a few wildflowers I spotted today.

This flower is known as Crow Poison, Nothoscordum bivalve. Not sure why.

And to this day, I do not know the name of this one. It usually shows up in spring and in fall. Does anyone know? If not, it's time to go see if I can get an ID. It seems to do better in years with more rain.

It seems I've seen that Clammy Hedgehyssop around here. I'll have to keep my eyes pealed for it. Ha! I'll see it one day & then not be able to remember where/how I learned what it is. Whistling

Pretty. Is your butterfly and American Beauty? Somehow I mix up those and Painted Ladies.

GrammaChar, funny about those spiders, I thought they were some kind of eggs and when I started taking pictures, they started to move. One of my favorite things about taking pictures is I can get a much closer look at things. Hilarious!

One of my favorite California natives is now in full bloom in my garden: spider lupine (Lupinus benthamii), with its tall inflorescence and spindly leaves. Here it is growing mixed with blunt-leaved lupine (Lupinus truncatus, another CA native), an unusually sparse-flowered and shade-tolerant lupine with flowers that change from violet to magenta as they age.

Welcome to ATP John! Welcome! Welcome! Welcome! What beautiful native lupines you have shown us!

Christine I love those bluebonnets and paintbrush! My spiderwort is going gonzo too. I really need to go out picture taking. That Jacob's Ladder is adorable. Great pic of it. Look at the pollen on the petals.

Sadly the bluebonnets are starting to fade now. That's okay - more room for Indian Blankets. Lots of Poison Hemlock blooming along the river. I've heard that the way to identify it is by the red spots on the stem which are referred to as Socrates' Blood. Don't know if that's true or not - but it worked when the kids were little to keep them from picking the pretty flowers.
