Some additional FL info. I just received a mail from a lady in Whitefish, Montana saying the fern leaf single I had sent to her was alive and doing well. The basic fern leafs are from, and enjoy, a harsh environment.
I stumbled upon a p. tenuifolia at a True Value Hardware store in a trade gallon pot for $24.99. It came home with me, and I will be checking that store out next time I am in that town. They got in a bunch of Monrovia Itohs, and if they mark them down I will be bringing some home.
LG - My garden grows with love and a lot of hard work.
Way to go!
I stumbled onto what I think is a tenuifolia seedling, and it followed me home too.
They were just all labelled as paeonia species.
If it is not tenuifolia---it certainly has tenuifolia in its heritage.
I must take a picture!
Same here, Karen. And when I do find them they're typically Sarah Bernhardt--beautiful but I already have it! Lowes carried a couple of tree peonies last year, hoping they'll do the same this year. I promised my sisters I'd get some for them if so....
They don't have them yet, will try back next weekend. Hoping they'll carry them this year! I want to pick them up in the next week or so because my mother is driving to see both sisters in around 2 weeks, would be perfect if she just drops plants off for me.
A few pics of what one needs to know when purchasing fern leafs from big box stores etc. New baby plants have a tendency to have larger cut leaves so do not despair if they do not appear to be genuine. I have had baby divisions with leaves almost the same as my known hybrids. Like children, they tend to grow out of bad habits.
Cleaned the grass and few weeds form my FL bed. The doubles bloomed first this year and are now showing signs of going dormant. Temps have been 90+ the last couple of days with no rain in sight.
For those new to fern leafs, this is normal for this time of the year. Do not panic, it is only resting. Do not water them as too much water can cause roots to rot.
Great educating photo, Jerry! I sure would freak out too if a plant of mine looks like that at mid of growing season if I am a beginner at growing fernleafs.
