I found the first scapes of the season yesterday. There are four each on the two Miss Victoria plants we have, not a suprise for it is a small flower and is usually the first to bloom, but---last year the first to bloom was the large flowered Tribal Council, and it has five scapes on it. I consulted my list and last year large flowered Katherine Caldwell as an early bloomer, haven't found a scape on it yet. The big thrill was finding the first scape on Dragonfly Dawn. This plant did not put up any scapes last year--it was new, but it looked large enough to have bloom stalks, however, did not happen. So, really looking forward to seeing this one bloom for the first time whenever it matures. It is really exciting when the new season starts and right now with all the rain and mild temps we've had, the daylilies are looking wonderful, so hoping for a great year.

Good for you! It's starting.

I've got a scape up on Glorious Autumn.

Rain and mild temps sounds wonderful. And scapes! No wonder
you are excited. So far, I just walk around the beds looking at foliage,
and even that is exciting. I'm soooo daylily weird. Whistling

I am surprised that I have not seen more scapes yet. Last year I had several EE bloomers. This year only a brand new to my garden daylily (Big Snowbird) has produced scapes. It was transplanted to my garden on Dec. 28th!

We had a mild winter, and for the last month or so, the weather has been alternating between overcast/warm rains and clear, sunny days. There were a few late-winter "teaser" scapes—the ones that don't amount to much, but now there's a good crop of "normal" scapes showing.

Unfortunately I'm seeing some scape cracking. This one looks as if I should have heard it from inside the house.

Yes, I have had two scapes to "blast' recently. I think because of all the rain. I did surgery on one that was still holding together partly. It is still looking good and I expect it to bloom shortly. The other one blasted completely like yours.

Ken, that is a sad sight to see!

And Larry, your resourcefulness is awesome! I would laugh except I bet I would be trying something similar! It would have been truly redneck if you would have used Duct tape Smiling
I can say this since I'm a bit red around the neck too!

I would love to see an update on whether this works or not. Smiling

Well, if I had not run out of duct tape that is exactly what I would have used, thanks for reminding me to pick some up. I will post a photo when it blooms.

That blasted scape was on Benz's 1994 Porcelain Queen, added last summer. I planted two Lily Auction fans in the hole, and they both developed into surprisingly big, robust plants. I threw some liquid fertilizer their way a couple of times this spring, which, combined with the rains, probably contributed to the blasting. I need to remember that plants in beds don't require as much feeding as container plants do.

I thought about taping a cracked scape on one of my seedlings, but when I looked a couple of days later it had cracked again a little lower and the buds were pointed at the ground, so I wrote it off. It was an older, "stunted in a container" seedling when I planted it last summer, and it busted out of the ground this spring with at least 3 big fans, so it will hopefully bloom again this year.

I remember hearing about silicone seal or some other adhesive being used along with tape in order to repair cracked scapes, but I can't remember what it was. It was probably some other kind of rubber-like glue, because silicone adhesive seems like something that would chemically damage a scape.

There must be a few rednecks up at the AHS, seems they suggested duct tape as a fix with an ice cream stick.

After seeing all those photos, I'm just glad you were able to mend yours to help it along into bloom season.

I was upset with a few scapes that were bent and twisted toward the ground; now I'm glad it was that and not scape blasting.

A few years ago, just an hour or so before a charity garden tour started (mine was one of the gardens featured), I snapped off one of the few daylily blooms left after a deer ravaged the garden. I was frantic, but managed to wire it back to the scape with floral wire Rolling on the floor laughing

We use scotch tape on blasted scapes. If the scape has a bit of tissue
still connected and we can tape it back, then the flowers will bloom.
If the scape blasts as much as in post number 5, we know not to bother
trying to save it. Sometimes they blast with such force the top part of
the scape will land a short distance away from the plant. Amazing to
see what plants are capable of.

We are seeing many scapes appearing in the beds of seedlings, and
the registered EE and E plants are scaping as well. Bloom time begins
here in early June, and some of these scapes are showing buds, so this
is unusual for us.
