Hi Gene

Acorns are like "Green Stamps" if you are old enough to remember those.

Admins give them out for contributing things like photos or new entries in the plant database, and tips or articles. Members sometimes give them to each other or to forum posts as "tips" or compliments or a sign of strong agreement.

They can be used to buy the small "micro-badges" you see in many members' posts (upper right corner) to indicate interests. (Five acorns per badge.) There are occasional raffles where you can "buy" raffle tickets with acorns. And Dave and Trish sometimes sell ATP Tee shirts or coffee mugs for cash or acorns.

Here are a few links that give the details:

http://garden.org/ideas/view/T...
http://garden.org/special/acor...

You can see how many you have thus:

Go to "Your Profile" (the head-and-shoulders icon upper left:

Thumb of 2016-04-04/RickCorey/3b20f8

Page down enough to find this, go past "Your Plant List":

Acorns:
You have XX.YY acorns in your account.

Not as far down, you can see how many you've received and given out:

"Some info about ..."
scroll down to:
Items given special acorn tips: XX received, YY given.

Yep, as always RickCorey gave a really good answer.

I can only add that if I like a post that someone has written I usually give them a Thumbs up but if I REALLY like their words I give an acorn tip.

(I will now give a Thumbs up for the question posted by @gasrocks and I will give an Acorn acorn tip to RickCorey for his answer.)

Thanks both. Wow, Green Stamps. I had almost forgotten about those. I do remember licking stamps and filling up books. We got something big once using Green Stamps but I do not remember what it as. And my next question was going to be about "Badges." Gene

When you begin to accumulate acorns you can 'spend' some of them to 'buy' badges. If you look at any given post you will see badges that help you to know what type of interests folks have. Up to 12 badges will show in the upper right part of a post. Some folks have 30 or more badges. You can re-order the badges so your favorite 12 will show on your posts.

Usually when someone asks about badges some of us will send 5 acorns so you can 'buy' a badge. Hmmm...okay, I will send you 5 acorns. Have fun 'shopping" for badges! Oops, I almost forgot. One of the badges costs a bit more; the tomato badge has a price of 10 acorns.

I guess, in looking at my membership and the posts I've made and the photo's I've posted, all I ever seem to get is a "Thumbs-Up" and have never received an Acorn from anyone. Yeah, I'm feeling just a tad left out here. I get many many 'Thumbs-up" for my photo's of my Iris, but no one gives me an Acorn.
So I'm really wondering what it takes to get an "Acorn tip".

Acorns? Gasrocks, I gave you one for asking! ;) AlanJ, same thing! ;) Rick, wonderful, as usual!

Acorns are also given for performing various functions like uploading pics to the plant database here, filling in plant details (annual/perennial, hardiness zones, etc...,) writing tips/articles, prob other stuff that's not coming to mind at the moment.

Badges? Anyone who remembers green stamps probably also laughed at the movies from which these clips come. We don't need no stinkin' badges! ...

We don't need no stinking badges. I used that as a reference in class once last year. Blank stares. I asked if anyone knew what movie that quote came from. No replies. Treasure of the Sierra Madre. More blank stares. Not a single student had seen one of the all time classic movies! Sigh. What is this world coming to? Gene

What's your beef! ??? I love it when I get a thumbs up and acorns. It's just our way of showing appreciation for the comments, pictures, and contributions to the data base. And when I feel appreciated it gives me motivation to continue to contribute to this site. If you're not impressed by others' contributions (and there are a few who aren't, looking at their profile)...well, that's on you! You definitely do not have to be a part of any of it!

There was a former member who had made it known that she did not want thumbs up or acorns and refused them; didn't ever buy badges either which requires acorns for purchase.. Well, she was so rude to members on the forum so many times that finally admin. had to do something.

So please, do not question our system of giving rewards...this is different from trying to motivate students in a classroom!

If I had misconstrued your intent on this thread...then I humbly apologize! *Blush*

I don't "think" that's what Gene meant, KD -- but, just in case he did... Gene, I'm sending you 5 more acorns, please buy one of those stinkin' badges! A Wisconsin one? A U.S.A. one? Cold winters? Iris?

@rainbow, Gene was replying to my joke about badges, I said it first. I don't think anybody is disparaging anything.
