I would think Lilies would do well up there...if you could protect them from the gophers, and other varmints. This one was a potted Mother's day plant that I got at the grocery store about 4 years ago. When It was finished blooming, I Dumped the pot, and stuck the whole works in the ground, at the same level. It is always the first to appear and bloom for me, and smells heavenly when I walk by...or the breeze is from the east.

I just quickly checked the lilies for deer resistance, one blurb said resistant, one said deer love them (asiatics). I have a large (comparatively speaking, for my yard) now that the deer will not get into, so i will check again later. I used to have Stargazers...love the fragrance...Fragrance is always a big plus with me.

I've got a blooming papaver that I just have to share. Hope this isn't horning in on your thread, Carol - if its bad form, please let me know.

I couldn't believe it when I saw this one this am. I can't get a top-down pic until I take a step stool, or step ladder out there - its 4' tall.

Two days ago it looked like this:

Thumb of 2016-04-09/CarolHB/6d901d

Obviously I've never had anything like this before, so I'm all excited. Next year, tho, I'm starting with seeds instead of spending too much on 4 inchers from afar.
Thanks for your kind attention to my giddiness.

Not Bad form at all. We all show what we have in this kind of thread. I just happened to be the one to start for April. Love those poppies. I had them for years but they got crowded out.
Welcome aboard! Welcome!

Thanks for the welcome, Carol. I grow everything in containers so I'm not worried about crowding out, just dying out in case I forget something, like food or water. I love the flowers but get tired of looking at all that boring green stuff while I wait for them. Does the papaver foilage always turn yellow at the base? If so, next time I'll be sure to underplant with something interesting. Thank You!

Gorgeous poppy! Is that, by any chance, 'Lauren's Grape'?

Yeh, mine always did that. Much of my garden is in pots too, but the poppies were in the ground, in a crowded flower bed, so the bottom leaves didn't show much.

Oh wow! I didn't ID the thing. My bad. Its 'Black Peony' - fully double. I think Lauren's Grape is a different configuration, a p.orientale. The peony series is p. hybridum. Select Seeds has a seed mix of the peony series. It doesn't seem to include the black. I got two of these from Annie's as 4 inchers.

Thank You! Carol. Now I know the turning yellow thing is normal I can deal with it. And Sherry - you are very welcome.

Those orchids look great! My Ornithogalum started to grow, then just rotted. Aside from Freezias and lilies, none of my bulbs have done anything this year. Either lack of rain or lack of chill, or both I suppose.

Thanks Carol! My freesias are done for the season, not happy with its growth this year, but at least it tried to make some blooms. My Ornithogalum dubium seems about a month late, but am glad it is managing to bloom now.
