If there were holes in your plants, sounds like Harry Hornworm was making his way through your tomatillos.

So, tell me again, when do you plant tomatillos? And, to you grow them like regular tomatoes? I'm about to start the tomato seeds this weekend. Sure would like to grow some tomatillos. I LOVE salsa verde!!! Rolling my eyes. Rolling my eyes.

Gymgirl, I would start them now, since they enjoy the same conditions as tomatoes.
Here is one salsa verde
http://allrecipes.com/recipe/9...

I did both cooked and raw ones. For cooked, I would put them in a covered skillet and just let them go. They browned slightly, and collapsed, then they go in the Ninja. The salsa ended up thin enough, so be easy on the water, or drain it.

The paper husk forms first, eventually the fruit fills it and splits it open, or they fall off.
Plant it and they will come.

Sallyg,
Thanks for the recipe! I do believe I'll be doing the raw salsa verde! nodding nodding

Now, where do I get tomatillo seeds, and, is there a particular variety I should be looking for? Also, will these grow well in a 25-gallon container? A LARGE container?

Thanks! I tip my hat to you.

I just ordered Tomatillo seeds from Totally Tomatoes:
Tamayo R Hybrid and Toma Verde varieties.

Not the greatest reviews, but, hey, nothing beats a wish but a try!

Gonna grow multiples of each on opposite sides of the yard, in 25-gallon cattle molasses tubs.

I should get at least a few Tomatillos! Glare

I think you'll get plenty! I had bought mine as starts at a nursery, but seeds shouldn't be too hard for anyone to find. I'm wondering if I'll have volunteers ( did I already ask? I don't remember, if I got the answer)
Plant it and they will come.

Last yr. I grew some for 1st time.
The purple ones sounded good. Sweeter than regular. Taste. Good.
Not big producer. Butt some bug. Small bug. Got into them. Left little black turds. Very small hole. I never figured out what bug. 😡
So this spring. For the first time in over 30yrs of gardening ! I already got some yellow sticky tape #.
Im gonna catch them boggers when they start to move in
on my garden ###

They are really easy to start from seed. And they make the best Salsa Verde!!

I haven't grown any in years and should get back to trying some again.

Started my tomatillo seeds Sunday night! Hurray!

"Tamayo R Hybrid" (large fruits) Thumb of 2017-04-11/Gymgirl/5d74c5

and

"Toma Verde" (smaller, brilliant green fruits) Thumb of 2017-04-11/Gymgirl/4c5a48

from Totally Tomatoes. They are 65 & 70 dtms, so should be popping around the 1st of May!
Looking forward to some salsa verde. Rolling my eyes.

My intention is to plant them in 25 gallon cattle molasses tubs. Have lots of finished compost.

My tomatillos are ready to be potted up. In fact, they are getting too tall! Almost 6" now, with a 2nd set of true leaves coming on. They do behave differently than regular tomatoes, and, they SMELL different than regular tomatoes, too.

Interesting growth habit. More like a true vine than the tomatoes. We shall see. Hoping to have them potted up and hardening off this weekend. Definitely planting these in those cattle molasses tubs...

Is two plants per 25 gallon tub too many? Confused Also, do I stake/cage these, or let them run wild?

Ya'll lmk.

Hugs! Lovey dubby

Two per tub ? OK
They grow quite tall.
If you dont tie em. They will be everywhere. 6.8.10 feet in every direction. Best get yourself a big tomato basket.

Still haven't transplanted the tomatillos in yet. Built two new raised beds this weekend, and leveled and filled them in before our monsoon rains yesterday. My area got a record-setting 6.58", and, all of it dropped into my new raised beds, LOL! Way to hustle that free water.

Although, I DID throw my back out trying to dig out the grass, Friday. Ended up renting a tiller to complete the job. Hired my neighbor boy to haul the topsoil into the beds, then shovel in the compost from the Geobin.

He EARNED his money this weekend, LOL! And, saved me in the process! We finished just as the sky opened up Saturday... Barely able to move the rest of the weekend. Major painkillers... D'Oh!

Thanks, Philip!

The bed immediately to the left of the new ones is collards, and there's a bed next to that one with beet greens. Both are ready for harvest.

The Earthboxes behind the new beds have spinach. I'm about to clear those out to start some other veggies. I tip my hat to you.
