Thanks, guys!

We're having rain all this week, so, indoor gardening games: building structures, and bending PVC pipe for hoop covers. Gotta keep all those beds covered lest the squirrels start an oak forest...

Tomatillo bed update.

I transplanted nine (9), 9-week old Tomatillo plants, and one Tomato Plant in this bed on March 18, 2017. As of this post, they are 11 weeks from seed.

Yesterday, I added the marigolds and basil plants.

tomatillo-palooza, lol. How do you use them all? How big do yours get? I saw a baseball size tomatillo at the grocery store, That's nuts. My biggest was like a hickory nut with husk size.
I found a blob of rotten tomatillo mush in the garden under the leaves, with visible seed. I planted some, will let you know if they sprout.
Plant it and they will come.

Ok, guys,
Is it my imagination, or, do tomatillos grow REALLY fast? I felt, and some of those paper lanterns are filled with fruits, already!

LMK. Remember, this is my first time.

Also, as I harvest them in batches, until I get enough to make something, do I put them on the counter? In the fridge? freezer? what? Confused

Leave 'em whole? cut 'em up? what? I tip my hat to you.

Depends how soon your going to use them.
I refrigerate everything or freeze.
For example :
Take what they say about tomatoes. Well ! I like mine cold, in refrigerator.
In frig, tomatoes keep a couple weeks or more. How long do they last on the slelf ? A week ?

toma TILLOS, Phil. Smiling

Gym girl, depending on size, or what you need for your recipe, a batch could be a dozen of them. I picked them when the skin turned tan and usually the fruit has filled it up and split it then. Have to look up basic recipes. I used the Ninja to grind them up pretty small with onion, salt and jalapeno and cilantro. Or, I filled a medium skillet one layer deep, a bit of water, cover and pan roast till they collapse, then Ninja. They added a sweetness when roasted.
Plant it and they will come.

Here's one to start, that I used
http://www.foodnetwork.com/rec...
I used it. More ideas at the bottom (if you can wait/wade through all the extra crap that pops up.)
Oh. So when they really came in fast, I would collect them, pull off all the skins, and rinse off the stickiness, and toss them in the Ninja, and freeze. Or make the salsa and freeze. I really ought to get one out and sample again before I recommend that ....

They might also recommend you prune the plants to make bigger fruit and not get so branched. MaypopLaurel can tell you if she bothers with that, I think. I don't know how the grocery got some monster ones.
Plant it and they will come.

I make salsa out of them and can it. Really good. Roast tomatillos, corn, onions, garlic. Add your fluid (vinegar) and sugar if you want it. You can can in a hot water bath.

I have my first bloom on one of my bushes, but nothing on the second. Very sad. They have to cross pollinate, so this one is wasted.

Liz, that's disappointing! Maybe three bushes is safer than two. Or four- and try not to feel obliged to use every stinkin fruit, cuz inevitably you'll be swimming in them then.

I found my salsa was quite loose enough with no added water or other liquid, but maybe that all "depends." Come to think of it, I pan roasted uncovered, they let out juice as they cook.
Plant it and they will come.

I can't find the plants around here, which is weird. I planted seeds. I had 3 out of 6 come up, but all at various times. No one synchronized their watches, dang it! I have one that's 15" tall and flowering, one that is 6" and not flowering, and one that just grew it's first true leaf yesterday. Next year, I definitely plant more seeds!

I'm so glad you reported, I have some seeds in a pot, so I won't panic if I don't see them very soon. Luckily, tomatillos as starts are common enough here.
Plant it and they will come.

Hey, Gymgirl: I freeze my tomatillos, either raw or roasted. You can chop or freeze whole (I prefer chopped). Make salsa verde.....I just used some of my frozen chopped tomatillos to make a tomatillo/cilantro crema sauce to over some chicken/cilantro tamales.
