I am new to gardening. I live in Zone 6 and am in need of help.
First I need 2 tall shrubs to frame a window that thrive in shade.
I also need plants of varying heights for west side on the house that gets afternoon sun.

Welcome! Perhaps a Yew, Sky Pencil Holly, or Hetz Japanese Holly might work for your shady area. Maybe an Azalea also.

Sky pencil was also my choice for the window.

Afternoon sun: coneflowers, Asiatic type lilies, daylilies, tall phlox, salvia, roses (come in just about every height and every color except true blue), bee balm.

Those are a few that I can think of right off the bat. Smiling

Drive around your neighborhood, see what may be growing in the light conditions you describe, see if there is something you are attracted to. Do you have a local nursery with knowledgable staff? (not a big box store Rolling my eyes. ) They may give you some suitable suggestions to get you started.

I've looked up the Pencil Holly and the others. There is virtually no sun. We purchased Giant ferns. Does anyone know if the holly will live...The care says it needs some sun.

I'm not sure where in southwest Michigan you are located but Garden Crossings in Zeeland is a great nursery and I love Romence Gardens in Grand Rapids. They are very helpful.
