Hostas forum: Help with hosta something happened over winter

Anyone know what would cause this problem (below pic)? This hosta was full last year; looks like the middle died out or something ate it?

It's called a fairy ring. You can dig it up, remove the center and plant the remaining healthy eyes. I've heard some gardeners suggest putting compost in the center and the plant is supposed to fill back in. If it's a big enough hosta you may not even see it once it grows and fills out.
