If you have tried this and have some you are proud of please share. Also which recipe are you using?

I am looking on Pinterest and I like the spheres, the leaves and troughs the best. Any tips would be great. Hurray!

Thanks,
Teresa

I have made them using old plastic bowls to mold them around but mine begin to crumble around the top edges within four or five years. After that I don't like moving them about the garden. I have not made any in a long while.

Hi Bonnie, my sister made some about 10 years ago, and hers have done the same thing. I wonder if it happens to all of them? She had some deep sand, so she used the sand to mold some deep troughs. I've had the recipe for years, but haven't tried it yet, but I still want to. If you have any photos of yours, we'd love to see them!

I have some I purchased from a nursery that have lasted more than 5 years. They have a molded/smoothed top edge so maybe that protects them

Thanks for posting pics of your, Marilyn. The only thing I see that is different is that yours appear to be much thicker. Maybe the ones I've seen that cracked were too thin to begin with.

Clearly I need to give some attention to the plantings, but here is a hypertufa I made from a plastic shell party bowl I bought from amazon. I used the recipe from the hypertufa gardener. It is two yrs old.

That looks very nice! I have a huge plastic shell like that. Thanks for the great idea on how to use it.

Thank you, everyone. When I made the shell, I made 3 and gave two away as gifts. I tried both perlite and vermiculite and was much happier with the look of the vermiculite shell.

I've been wanting to make more, but just haven't had any good ideas. I'd like to make a lantern, but need a good plan. Smiling

Let me know if you find some instructions. I had bought my sister a Japanese lantern and the concrete ones are so HEAVY!

I agree on how heavy concrete lanterns are. Making a hypertufa one would be so much better. I'll have to look to see if there are any instructions for them anywhere.

Great idea to use vermiculite instead of the glowing white perlite!

Were the instructions just for making hypertufa mix, or for actually making a hypertufa lantern?

I made this by making a form with plywood, I used styrofoam for the inset areas and a chocolate mold for the little japanese symbol in the corner.
