I have a few areas where I can plant them. I'm also going to give a friend a few plants once they get bigger. Thumbs up

Be sure to let them go to seed--they really are the hummers' friends, and you'll have plenty more for your friends, too.

Ok I'll definitely let them go to seed. I definitely need more plants in my garden to attract hummers.

I have also heard that goldfinches love to eat the seeds of these species. Maybe even read that right here in the forum. They are wonderful Salvias for so many reasons! Even in zone 6a, last year the Summer Jewel Red reseeded freely and produced second generation flowering plants before frost! They are also easy to collect seed from- I plan to do that as well so I can start some early indoors next year. They grow so fast- another example: this year I planted 4 Summer Jewel Red in the front row of my Agastache bed. My youngest dogs accidentally broke 2 of them off clear at the base, all that remained was a couple pair of leaves at the very bottom and the base of the stem. Both of them are now about 3/4 the size of the 2 that did not get broken and are blooming! I love big tall Salvias but there is always room for smaller ones too and the Coccineas are wonderful!

I didn't know that Judy. I think I've only seen a couple of goldfinches in my garden and that was a couple of years ago. I'm so happy to hear they grow and bloom fast because I was worried the heat would slow them down here? That's just amazing the ones that got broken have recovered so quickly. I have a Hot Lips salvia that's a little too big for one of my flower beds so I'll be giving it a major haircut once it finishes blooming. Hilarious!

Do you know what kind of coccinea? I have coral, which gets about 2 feet tall; and a taller red one. They both reseed through the season so I get several generations. I even have some coral seedlings that reseeded and I put them in large whiskey barrel container with petunias, purple basil and ornamental peppers.

@SCButtercup I think it's just the regular red coccinea? I got the seed packet in a trade and it just said salvia coccinea. I bet the coral ones look great with petunias, purple basil, and ornamental peppers? Thumbs up

The red is beautiful and once you plant it keeps coming back all around the yard. Nice little pops of red.

It definitely sounds like the perfect plant. Hurray! I'm hoping it attracts hummingbirds too.
