Hello everyone,
I know that we are from different zones, but I thought it would be interesting to see what you did in your daylily garden today.

I admired my one and only bloom of Fern Stone. She is always my first daylily to bloom.

After that, I spent about an hour removing weeds. Where do they all come from?! I keep trying different things to help reduce the weed issue, but I've not yet solved that problem.

The last thing I did today was to spray to hopefully keep the little critters away from my daylily buds on those beautiful scapes. I hate to see a beautiful bloom marred by a little critter.

Now, what did you do?

I took a quick peek before work and saw about 7 blooms. We got a lot of heavy rain, so when I got home they all looked pretty sad. Tomorrow is a new day!

It wasn't a big gardening day for me, because I had errands to run in the city. This morning I did a quick garden tour and admired the little standard dwarf bearded irises that are blooming, and the last of the lingering tulips. I watered any daylily seedlings that needed watering and checked my perennial beds, my holding beds, and my veggie garden. Then I watered my annuals in pots and planters, gave the dogs a treat, and left for the day!

I did stop by a nursery on the way home, but the daylily selection wasn't exciting. I bought a few more bags of mulch for my perennial borders and then home.

Yesterday was my workday in the garden. Today I ran Mom to the Dr for a checkup. It was good. We also made the rounds to decorate in the cemeteries.
Pick up groceries, ect. I did buy a large bag of Osmocote to put down. I came home to a nice box of daylilies on the back porch.

This weekend I will be planting H. Angel Ice, Big Bird, Crazy Ivan (one I lost)

Oh, had a senior moment also: H. Pink Butterfly, Face Paint and Riot on the Kindergarten Bus. A few I had wanted a while now. Feeling excited!

I walked around my gardens at least twice today while walking the dog. I need to get out there this weekend and plant my marigolds and do some weeding in the front garden. Two of my gardens will be due for fertilizer this weekend too.

Everyday, I look and look, hoping that there might be something of a scape, but still too early here in Zone 5B -- CT.

Heidi, you will be in bloom season after our peak while we are in mourning lol.

So far I have had blooms on Muscle and Blood, Pat Garrity and Jester's Collar.

Went out this morning looking for scapes and found some on Butterscotch Ruffles, Little Business, Oriental Silk, Siloam Little Girl, Early Fragrance, a NOID and a seedling that has never bloomed before.

I did also find 2 mangled scapes. One on Butterscotch Ruffles (no big deal) and the only scape of Quit Fussing . I have 3 baby kittens (strays) in my backyard and I suspect they are the culprits.

Went out hunting scapes and found one small one on Summer Dawn! Nothing on the other 96 varieties~ (I almost typed snapes...don't want to do that kind of hunt!)

Elena you are only 60-75 miles south of me, so one could only hope that scapes are in my near future.

I just went out and mapped out my garden based on the pictures I took a few weeks ago. I won't be able to finish identifying some of my knowns but not labelled ones until they bloom. Back inside now because even in the shade, the humidity and heat were getting unbearable!

Now I will input into my spreadsheets the flowers that I do have ID'd.

I put on my tick and bug repellent pants and shirt and left the air conditioned house and checked the daylilies. First blooms in my 5a zone garden yesterday and today---looks like middendorfs-small orange only two or three blooms to a scape, but welcome! Heat got to me and I went back in. I am a bit pessimistic. This heat forebodes storms when it breaks and then every thing will be blown over. Fumed a bit about my usual misplacement of plants because old yellow iris, collected seed grown aquilegia, and the first flower on an oriental poppy are too far apart for the colors light yellow and purple to contrast at the back door and I didn't put up a trellis for clematis Betty Corning and she has become a mess five feet across smothering iris, poppies, later daylilies, overgrown asters that already need pinching back and will be seven feet tall by Fall. And we are destined to meet wife's sister and husband for dinner. vastly different life styles. They lived in Europe for decades, I have only been out of the state a few times. All will be civil and uncomfortable. I try and keep my sense of humor

Haven't done anything in the garden today. Shopping and cleaning. The 6 week old chicks were moved out to the new coop yesterday. Rather than just clean up the pen in the extra room I decided that with all the sdlgs moved out off the light stand and now planted I might as well clean the whole room. Besides, it is way to hot out there today.

I am a bit crazy, but the heat doesn't really bother me. I take out a travel mug of ice water, and keep hydrated. I finished mulching my perennial beds. I transplanted El Bandito from the holding bed to a perennial bed where it should bloom behind the black-eyed susans (that is the plan, anyway ). Then I dug out a hosta that was planted in the wrong spot. It was too short for the spot. I moved it to the front of a border, and replaced it with a taller variety. I then took a few trips around the garden to check everybody out, and admire the irises that are blooming. Then I came in for a cool bath, lovely, and made a light supper.

We've had an inordinate amount of rain in our area. Every day of the week for many weeks rain has either been forecast or it is raining. Today was beautiful out. But aside from taking pictures, I spent it spraying for ants. The ants have been forced from below the ground because of the saturated soils and are seeking any higher place to lay eggs and nest. They are under every Plant saucer I have (which are many since I grow mostly in containers). Pick up a pot and there are hundreds of them scurrying around carrying their ant eggs trying to escape exposure. They have invaded bags of top soil, potting mix and I saw a dead baby bird this morning just crawling with them. Every surface seems to have ants scrounging around on it, including daylilies. They fall into your hair when you are deadheading the roses, get into your shoes, and if you aren't careful you could literally have ants in your pants. Thank goodness these are just the small "sugar" ants and not the Fire Ants or Carpenter Ants. BUT It is a lesson reinforced that I leaned long ago. Never put bark mulch up close to the foundation of your house or you will draw ants into the house. This year in particular that would be one heck of an invasion.......Maryl
