I think this is commonly called Daisy Fleabane which means it is an Erigeron. There seem to be several Erigerons which share the common name. Any idea what might be correct or is it possibly something else entirely? This plant has long stems with sparse, nondescript foliage. It's been a wet year, but it always has the effect of being tall and lanky. This year it's running from about 24" to 36" tall. Just hoping the bloom may be enough for an id. Photos taken in the ditch by the side of a country road.

Thanks for that link, Myriam. Based on the info there, I'd rather think it was Erigeron modestus instead. It's been a wet spring, but normally it is much drier here. This description "gravelly or rocky calcareous soils in open areas and hillsides in North Central and western Texas" from the webpage fits where it grows near me and my own location. I mostly only see it growing where there is limestone outcropping in the terrain. Really thin, poor, and usually, gravelly soil. It doesn't seem to thrive well in the red clay/gravel above the outcropping nor the river bottom land below it. Looking at the Erigeron family there seem to be a lot that have similar blooms.

I don't think it fits either of those two species. I don't see any nodding flower buds, the look perky and upright.

Erigeron strigosus in Eastland County ..

http://www.freepatentsonline.c...

This fleabane is best identified by the narrow, strap-like upper leaves which do not clasp the stem

The flower buds aren't drooping!

it looks very close to white aster - the wild flower kind. even leaves match - narrow and sparse, though i can't see them clearly.

I've googled photos on all the suggestions and I'm not good enough to really tell. I went back and took a couple of photos trying to show leaves, stems and plant structure. Hope they work.

Those long green leaves showing are not part of the plant. They are leaf blades from some type of grass. I didn't see any leaf growth longer than 2-3" for mature leaves on the plant.

Still Erigeron strigosus for me. Everything fits, I looked at others in your area and this one is the only one where the flower buds don't droop. Leaves don't clasp the stem.

It is differentiated from the earlier blooming Philadelphia Fleabane (E. Philadelphicus) by narrower leaves which do not clasp the stem. It is differentiated from similar Eastern Daisy Fleabane (E. Annuus) by being less hairy, and rarely having toothed leaves. It is also less leafy than Eastern Daisy Fleabane.
