Here is my newest summer container, I just finished it last week. I found out about this wonderful little tree last year when goldfinch4 (Chris) posted a photo of hers.
Ullmus x hollandica 'Jacqueline Hillier', a miniature elm tree and Wooly Thyme.

It will take a bit for the thyme to fill in and look like a lawn.

Lynn, I love your little elm tree. Is this going to be a bonsai?

I've shown my Duckie succulent container on another thread. The coleus container next to it has come into its own so I thought I would get a picture of the two together. The container also has wire vine over the edge. There is a very dark coleus called Chocolate Mint planted in the ground between the two containers.

What a beautiful photo Connie. Is that S. 'Ogon' under the duck? How wonderful the contrast is between the semp and Ogon?
My wire vine made it through winter, it was a new plant for me last year. Love that little vine.
REALLY love your Chocolate Mint coleus.

Yes, "Ogon". It is the same cedar planter I posted on the container thread a few weeks ago but since then the "Ogon" has grown more up and around the duck! I love it!

I don't know the name of the semp but is is watermarked and likely from Home Depot or maybe Fred Meyer as I have picked up some nice ones there too.

The wire vine seems to be pretty hardy here as I have left it out in a a container unprotected over winter. One thing I have noticed though is it gets very congested at the base after a year and seemed to lose that nice draping effect. In other words it appeared to put its energy into making a lot of new shorter vines instead of a few nice long vines.

Connie, I forgot to answer your question about the little elm tree, but the word bonsai scared me half to death. I think it will just be a tree in a shallow bowl. Whistling

My wire vine is more like a clump this year. I think I just need to re-pot it.

Good on the "bonsai". Been there, done that. Killed that!!

Clump is a good description of the wire vine. I just haven't gotten around to trying to pick it apart or do whatever it needs. Maybe just re-potting will do it. Smiling

I am going to try re-potting mine, I think that will make it send out longer vines. It is in old soil right now from last year and it has compacted. : (

When my wire vine gets leggy, I place another pot right next to it full of potting mix, put the ends of the vine across the pot and cover the middle with potting mix and keep moist. In less than a month I have a pot full of new rooted wire vine. I then cut away from the mother plant. Another new batch of refreshed wire vine. Sharon.
If it is not going to affect you five years from now, do not let it get you down.

Connie, beautiful color contrasts in your photo....love it!

Sharon, you are so smart. Just like the way we place a baby spider plant in a new pot until it roots.
