That's good, Alice. These can be spectacular plants. I have seen these as center pieces at orchid shows. There are lots of different forms of this orchid so the new one will probably look different than the one you have. Be happy!

I have this one, Den bigibbum var compactum. It is a very easy grower, flowers well.

Yes, me too, and I fear we can't brag about ours being "compactum" either Ursula. At least I can't.

(Ursula generously shared a division of her Den. biggibbbum var. compactum with me a few years ago). Come to think of it, the flowers do look a little bit like Phals don't they.

Elaine...isn't there a HUGE orchid in the greenhouse at Selby....like REALLY HUGE...who's tag reads something like a phal-den something or other...it's tickling my brain...let me see if I can find a photo of it....

OK...it took me a while but I found it. It's a bulbo-phal, not a den-phal....but it's still pretty cool, and HUGE!

Ursula and Jim, my apologies for hijacking this thread. I was feeling bored and mischievous that day (and am still giggling over that name, who thinks these things up???)

Anyway, "Names" are an important almost academic subject and we should delete the goofy posts and concentrate on the serious stuff on this one.

It IS fun...but Jim went through a lot of work to cover the serious subject...I sorta agree with Alice....maybe we could just split the thread, keeping all of the serious name stuff in the sticky & making a separate one for our fun & silliness?? Ursula?
