Before this morning, the Lugosi was opening one flower at a time. I think she must be enjoying the gentle, off-and-on rains we have had the last 24 hrs. She's popping right now.

Beautiful daylily. Looks like Regale Finale (late bloomer).

Thank you, @dc0145a. It does look similar to Regal Finale but the Regal appears to have more purple in the petals and more lime-green in the throat. I know little about daylilies, and only have two (donated) varieties. The other variety is labeled Hemerocallis fulva 'Kwanso' but someone thought it might be Flore Pleno instead. I will take photos when those start blooming and perhaps we can pin the correct name on those plants.

That's a beautiful clump shot of Bela Lugosi! It's such a nice daylily. I grow it too, but mine has not started blooming yet.

drdawg.
I think you meant to say Flore Pleno instead of Regal Final... see how plants can get mislabeled.
I went out in the garden today and took some photos:

The blooms on these plants look so similar I can't tell them apart. I have others in another bed that also look like this but they are only around 12-14 inches tall. The tall looking ones in the photo are about four feet, the others range from about two to three feet tall. The coloration is more alike in real life.
Are these Kwanso, Flore Pleno, or just something similar...I don't know.

This is 'Kwanso':

Thumb of 2016-06-05/sooby/c344bf

it's less organized than 'Flore Pleno' and the latter has more of a layered petal look.

From Stout's early description in the AHS Yearbook 1957.

" The number of fully formed petals in flowers of Flore
Pleno usually ranges from 8 to 14 and the number of well-formed stamens usually ranges from 6 to O. The flowers of the Kwanso type show wide variation in the relative numbers of petals and stamens. Frequently the only well-formed petals are those of the primary or first whorl in which case
the number of poorly developed petaloids and normal and abortive stamens is high. Decrease in the number of bladed petaloids is accompanied by increase in the number of stamens. Often
in the flowers of Kwanso the petals and petaloids are much twisted and curled. "

It looks like it to me, it's a much neater flower than 'Kwanso'. I don't have 'Flore Pleno' but from pictures in AHS publications etc. I would say yours looks more like 'Flore Pleno'. They do get mixed up a lot. Both are pod sterile triploids as you probably know.

Sue, I am truly dumb when it comes to daylilies. I only have the two varieties and one was given to me two years ago and the other one, last summer. I simply stuck them side-by-side in a corner of my raised garden and kind of forgot about them. This is the first time blooming with the Lugosi and that's the one I got last year.

I had 4 fans of Bela and it never really got bigger than that. Last year a local farm was clearing out some entire clumps for free including Bela. So i got a very large clump and sold my extra fans off. Mine will probably not bloom until late June but it has many scales on it now. Cannot wait to see the show.
