Actually managed to get some things done in the garden today. Cut down the stems that had died off for the season. Dug up some bulbs that had were not deep enough. Had bulblets sticking up through the soil. Added some soil to low spots. Put some compost down on most of the lily bed. And added compost and earthworm casings to the oldest lily bed.

So all things considered, and figuring I worked 6 hours at my job, pretty productive day I would say.

On another note, some of the bulbs I dug up were spring planted bulbs. Typically I planted in groups of 3 bulbs, some were less but anyways, I really can't believe how many bulblets there were in addition to what I planted. Either I had gotten really good soil to fill the raised bed in with, or I got really lucky. Lol

Good, rich soil is worth it's weight in gold, IMHO! Thumbs up

I have a big pile of shredded oak mulch from a stump grinding a year ago, is that safe to spread over my tulips now?

Also, I have a 2'x2'x2'container of a dozen asian lillies and have never been sure when to dump the contents out and separate them for more containers. Is this the right time in zone 7? They are all dormant now.

@yardenman. Hello there. I'm sorry. I can't answer the question you have for the mulch and tulips. I have no experience with tulips.

To answer your lily question. Some flowers multiply faster than others. What most people do is when the flower count seems to not be as good, poor performance than previous years, then it's time to dig and divide.

Others will just dig and divide every 3 years or so. How long have you had them planted in this container?

Found you! What is the name of that enormous bulb? Holy cow! Everything looks beautiful at your house. I'm considering some of the border blocks you have around your beds. It makes everything so neat and tidy.

Rolling on the floor laughing well hey there. That bulb is a lily bulb. White Henryi.

That retaining wall was actually done on a whim. The idea hit me. Next thing you know I'm at home depot loading up a pallet of them. But it turned or really good. It added layers and texture to the front of my house I thought. I'm pondering putting a flower bed in the front of them. Don't tell Ramona that though! Nothing going on in the gardens. Got some lily seed germinating in the basement though.

In the meantime, I'm glad I got the Christmas lights up today before the snow came.
