That is true @Zazinnia
Which is why it was leggy when I brought it in last fall and then just continually kept blooming during the winter without enough light. I chopped off about 2/3 when I took it out this spring, but I'm thinking it might have been better to have taken it nearly to the soil level. I'm just not sure how the plant would have reacted to being chopped that severely. I've grown them before this one, but I think they've only lasted for 3-4 years at most. I can't remember why - if they just wore out or just wore me out.

Just bought it this summer. I had one before...planted it in the ground but it did not return. Sighing!

My goal for next summer (always making plans, aren't we) is to add more red to my flower beds. Seems like red just pops!

The Sanseveria started blooming! I expect I've been seeing this same plant for almost 70 years now and this is the first time I've seen blooms. Good thing it's not grown for the blooms. They are pretty nice, but I can't detect any fragrance on these.

It's not blooms, but I also spotted 3 little figs on the Ficus carica 'Hardy Chicago'. That's a real surprise to me. I just planted it in the ground early this spring. Then the new growth got burned in a light freeze and it had to start over. It's doing well right now. I hope it can survive winters here. It was just a rooted cutting last fall. I didn't expect any fruit for a year or two at least. I've only had exposure to established fig trees, not starter plants Smiling .

Donald, check the scent of the bloom on the snake plants at night. I think that's when it's supposed to be most fragrant.

Went out with the flashlight sniff. Yes. A lot like the Hoya. Nice fragrance, but I had to get really close before I could detect it. The ol' sniffer may not be up to snuff at the minute.

There were several fig trees when we lived at Carbon. I don't have the great sandy loam here that was on that lot, though. You are right about those preserves. My dad wouldn't touch a fig, but he did love those preserves. I think his favorite was using them as topping on a bowl of vanilla ice cream. He ate them on toast, bisquits and such. I like the preserves, but I'll also eat them fresh. Mainly I just like the way those huge, lobed leaves look.

Hurray! Hurray! Glad to hear that you got a whiff of the snake plant fragrance. I like the scent a lot. Lovey dubby When I have plants that are fragrant a night bloom, I bring them into the house for a few days to enjoy the blooms/fragrance, so that I don't have to drag DH outside with me to look at/smell the flowers. nodding

@needrain Glad you were able to detect the scent of the Sanseveria! They are really, really hard to kill, too! A friend had one in the darkest corner of their living room. I kept suggesting she move it to get some light. She said it seemed to be fine there and she really "hardly ever watered it." She and her husband were both working then and left their new rescue dog inside most of the day. The dog had been "watering" that poor Sanseveria when he was couped up during the day. When they figured it out ("p u"), they washed the plant off, repotted, and moved it to a sunnier location and it's still thriving.

Washingtonia palm flowers. First time it has bloomed in 12 years.

Washingtonia palm tree. Bought for $6. at a Walmart in Marble Falls, TX. Thought it would stay small since it wasn't going to get much care, and it freezes up there.

@froggardener We should have plenty seeds if you need a few. Looks like the seeds will come next. I read up on it when we got home. We might have to compete with the squirrels, but there should be seeds. The blooms are all around the top. The sun was so bright yesterday, I couldn't get very good photos.

Wow! That's neat!

Do you worry about the dogs chewing on it? For the first time ever I was told about a first hand incident re a Doberman chewing on the sago. Not a nice tale at all with the worst possible ending. Truthfully, when I trimmed off the freeze damaged foliage this year, I just dropped them on the ground. I know the puppy got them because of where they got relocated, but maybe I'll be more careful now. The tags that were on them at Home Depot had dire warnings and said the dogs were actually attracted to them (I've not noticed that here).
