I compost regular Iris refuse -- which means that I add it to the manure pile, which gets pretty hot, and which is picked up and used by a local vegetable grower. BUT -- anything with an indication of rot goes on the burn pile. No point in spreading THAT around!!!

This is a discussion I had with Chuck Chapman on FB, about how tedious it was to separate the iris foliage from the other weeds and put all the iris foliage in the dumpster. He said he just composted everything, because the germs were already in the soil, and it was other factors that led to the rot. So all of my iris vegetative matter goes in a far off pile, except for the actual parts with rot. This I put in a small plastic grocery sack that goes to the dumpster.

Hmmm...When I get a lot of irises growing, I'll have iris matter to deal with, but certainly not yet! I'll have to decide whether to dump or put in a separate pile. What do you eventually do with the separate pile??
