Hey, all the sedums are showing new growth and have woken up for the year. I cut off all the dead stalks last week from the fall as I leave them all winter around here. I do that on most of my plants, I do my garden cleanup in the spring.

Yesterday I ordered two more Purple Emperor plants as I have one. Then I found, quite by accident, I lovely really dark leafed one, even darker looking from the picture than Purple Emperor at Bluestone Perennials called Lynda Windsor. Ordered six of those as I know they send small plants there at Bluestone. But I haven't seen this one anywhere else.

Not quite sure were I will put the Lynda Windsor but the two Purple Emperor are going in a new narrow garden section in front of some serviceberry shrubs were I intend to put 5 sedum. Going to move 3 Matrona I already have there, then put the two Purple Emperor between them. Then leaving space between all of them I will put daffodil and tulip bulbs between all this fall. This way I have a nice early spring display which folliage all dies down by the time the sedum starts to gow. Then later in the fall I will have a nice group of sedum blooming.

Rita, can't wait to see the pictures. You sound like a very creative person. I struggle with trying to figure out where to plants things for the best visual impact.

I do the same thing with my sedum, clean them up after they just start coming our of dormancy. I love the flower stalks displaying in the winter.

Sorry to say I don't have lots of pictures of the sedums. I consider them a "workhorse" type of plant in the garden. That is too say that they can't go wrong are about foolproof so I haven't taken lots of pictures.

I do have lots of daylilies but there are spots around here were the daylilies don't work, or I just want something else. I do have one bed were many of the Matrona are that also has the daylilies.

Here is the one Purple Emper plant that I currently have taken last August. It is in my front yard along in a row where I have lots of Agastache planted.

Oh Rita, I bet your neighbors love you. Look at that display, and it looks like it is along the front of your yard where everyone passing by can enjoy it. Which agastache are you growing. You can add that to the Companion Plants Database. I never thought about using them together. What a great idea.

You can see the sidewalk directly in front of that gardenbed. That little narrow section in front is directly in back of the low stacked stone wall that runs along the entire front of my yard.

The Agastaches are from High Country Gardens, which has the best selection of Agastache anywere. I have most all the varies they carry.

The next raised bed up, which you can just see a small section of, has daylilies and lilies.

Found a picture of the front yard on 9/24 were it really shows the sidewalk and how this garden is set up in terraces leading up from the street. It is taken from the opposite direction than the one above that shows the Sedum.

A thought on companion plants. I find the upright sedums and Agastache do very well together. The contrast in folliage really looks good in my opinion. Plus they can both easily take the same conditions as Sedum doesn't need alot of water.

Rita, your Purple Emperor looks great in that grouping. Are the leaves also tinted purple?

Yes, the leaves are dark. I love the fact that the leaves are dark.

I do too. I'm trying to get a bigger variety of foliage colors in my gardens to add more interest. That one is a beauty.

I only had the one but knew it would be prefect to mix with Matrona in my new small garden section. I will take pictures when its done but it should be awhile (May) till they send the new plants ordered. Its too early here. Still I have found that its quite ok to move plants really early. Just as soon as they start growing in fact and I just take a big batch of soil with the rootball when I dig. So I am going to start on that bed really soon.

It's pretty early here yet too. In fact, it got down to 19 deg. last night!

My yard is so flat, I really love to see gardens that have a contour and elevations. That is so pretty Rita.
Oh Chris, that is really cold. Brrrrr. I am on my way out the door to mow lawn and do a little weeding so will see you both a little later today.
Not trying to rub it in, just very thankful that we have had a break in the rain.

I really mean to plant those two Purple Emperor Sedums that are here waiting for planting. I just haven't gotten to it, just put it on my list. Seems like my garden chores list of things to do gets longer every day. That in spite of the fact that I am out there working on the garden each day LOL!

Hi Rita. Sounds like you have really been busy. I thought I was going to get my lawn mowed today. It didn't rain, but as I walk across it water is coming up around my shoes. Not good. No mowing today. Rain tomorrow, then we are suppose to get 3 days in a row with no rain. Sat. I should get to mow. Potted some things up today.

I moved 16 daylilies today. Maybe I get to the Purple Emperors tomorrow. It is always very busy in spring and today was warm like a summer day.

Zone 6B and you are having warm weather? We did have some sun today, but it is very chilly outside. Brrrrr.
A friend brought me some peach colored daylilies today. Don't know the name, but they are sure pretty. Will grow it over by some tall sedum.

Very pretty daylily. Yes, it was close to 90 today. Very warm for this time of year, very usual. Going back to normal weather by the weekend.

What's normal Rita? 90 degrees. Sigh.
Look what Zarubianum is doing today. This hen is only about the size of a nickle.
