I'm building a living wall, right out of the steep bank above my stock plant bed. It's hoped that the Sempervivum planted right into the sandy/clay soil will hold it in place and stop it from sloughing down on top of the Sedum plants. Here is the first showing the original site:
That stone work looks great what a nice start. In the clay bank you can embed broken pots or dig out small pockets and place a rock in the spot to help hold the plants in place until they get a firm grip in the soil.

Jacki that is going to have so much visual interest when it is all filled in. I can't wait to see it a couple of years down the road.
Holly that sounds like a great idea.
Holly...your living wall is fantastic...great job you and your DH did!
Jacki....WOW...you've got a lot of hard work to do, but I think it will be awesome when you finish. Wonder if it would be hard coordinating plants to give it an actual landscape look? Like the sky at the top (lighter colors) and some rolling hills (medium to dark colors) using plants. Am I making any sense... Sometimes I can't describe what I see in my mind and then again, maybe that's a fruity idea....

I've just been using a screwdriver to poke a hole, then putting the stolon of the chick into it to hold it. I like the idea of the broken pots, though. wonder if I can find some more broken terracotta pots somewhere.
Linda, I'm just doing it random; I like the idea of a pattern, but that's waaay too much thinking for me at the moment! It's going to take me a while...

Very inspiring pictures! Anybody have updates?
I have rocks, I even have a nice foundation for a rock planter, and it's been sitting there with no attention for several years. Hubby retired, and I thought it would happen after that, but nothing so far. I'm a bit chicken to start it myself.... Maybe I could trade some rocks for an enthusiastic helper??? With muscles.
Mary do you have some young men/boys you can recruit? Like from your church or high school ag dept.? I've done that in the past and it was wonderful. Sorry to say we don't have an ag dept in our local high school. : (
Don't forget to take before and after photos for our inspiration. : )
