I'll have to check mine, I don't recall it's having weak scapes last year. Is yours planted near a wall or fence, Becky?

Mine is in full sun & tends to have weaker scapes. The first year I had it, it had 3 rounds of blooms and was blooming in October when we had our first frost. It hasn't rebloomed since then.

I took some new photos of 'Beautiful Edgings' this morning and it has made great improvements over the time since I made my first post here about it.

I had planned to pull and count the dead scapes but I have seed pods on several of them so I just pulled one scape that looked pretty typical of the rest, and it had no pod on it.
The scapes are much taller than listed, 40 inches with 2 way branching and 18 buds per branch. I found it odd that the terminal y branches were so long, the two measured 13 inches each. So the buds tend to be spaced out on it well, still when I look at the clump it always seems all the blooms are right at the top for some reason. This plant had done very well this year in my garden and really churned out a lot of blooms. I failed to record the date of the first bloom on it this year. But the original scapes have bloomed out, it is reblooming and it might even be the second rebloom with still more to come. Now the reblooms are smaller during the hot summer weather we are having, but they were beautiful and as large as registered earlier in the year.

Edited:
Forgot to add a photo of the scape, and I wanted to show how long the the two terminal branches at the end of the scapes are on this plant. I think that is because it is a bud builder.

This is BE's first spring in my garden. I received it last fall and was rewarded this spring with 4 blooming scapes. A fifth scape was broken during a nasty storm and did not bloom. Three scapes needed some propping, the fourth is holding up on its own. I have one pod set on it. The lovely edge was not apparent on the first bloom, but has been present since though of varying intensity.

BE seems to need some time to settle in and get comfortable. I moved mine in early 2016 and it is now back to better performance this summer.

Becky, some weakness in the scapes may be because of your location. Look at the responses--most growers are much further north than we are.

Here is my FFE for Beautiful Edgings. I purchased it spring 2016 and it didn't bloom last year. It got moved with all of my other plants to my temporary holding beds back in mid May and it seems content.

I love the beauty of this flower.

I don't have an issue with weak scapes in my garden, either. @florange Arlene might be on to something. (I live up north.)

Interesting. I have mine in 2 locations. One location gets full sun all day long. The other gets sun for only about 6 hours a day. Both clumps have weak scapes.

Soil test, Becky Hilarious! One of these days I might prevail and you'll get one done.....strength of scapes can be related to nutrition. Scapes are extra tall here this year because of all the rain, I haven't noticed anything different about 'Beautiful Edgings' but one thing to consider is that bud count can decrease depending on climate. A lot of buds/flowers might have more effect on scape stabiity.

This cultivar is still blooming for me. We are now at the end of July. It is putting out more blooms this year, so would that make the scapes weaker?

Nita's garden was well shaded. Donald grew some seedlings in full sun while others were shaded. I saw 'BE' before Nita registered it in her shaded seedling bed. It was certainly a breakthrough for its day and many garden visitors encouraged her to register it. Every time she released one she would say, "Now its up to you to grow it where it likes to be to show the edge." At the time I was in Coldspring, Texas growing under tall pine trees. Few were the days when I had little to no edge. 'BE' likes to be well composted, planted high with good drainage but never dry. She's high maintenance compared to some, but well worth it. Another thing that I know about the Copenhaver farm, the garden soil was rich in potash. After all, Donald did burn down the dairy barn!

I will attest to the high maintenance. I didn't pamper it enough and it up and died on me. It needed a prime spot but there was no more room at the time. Shrug!

Well, ironically, my two are in two different raised beds and they have performed better than many of the others in the same bed. For me, this cultivar is one of my better bloomers and re-bloomers this year and was last year, too! Go figure! Rolling my eyes.

Mine is currently competing with weeds, never gets fertilized or irrigated (although it's had a lot of rain this year) and survives -22F (-30C) winters. It's currently flowering happily. I'd go out and take some pictures but yesterday when I was in that area a bee chased and stung me so I'm thinking not right now Whistling
