A lot of people can take lessons from them to use natural resources to solve big problems. Beautiful country and fantastic waterfalls. Thanks Gordon.

Yes.. Becky.. it was just that heart warming.. in so many ways..
Robyn.. there's lots of ways to set nature loose to perform for us.. it does take alot of daily work..on our part
Sharon. my pleasure...
June... I agree .. it was beautiful
Brenda.. yes.. a work of love.. of the bridge builders.. and the film crew.
using plants grown for their structure has always been a thought of mine.. from the time of Alex Erlandson.. the creator of the tree circus... he used approach grafting to create many living structers.. his is a wonderful.. if heartbreaking story...
I started one in front of a bit of land I had .. where I had apple trees growing in a line.. and their limbs espalliered together... growing/grafted together to make a living fence.. unfortuntely.. I sold the land before the fence was developed enough for the new owner to understand and keep it up.. or maybe it was the labor involved.. but it was removed in favor of lawn.. one of the plantings there survived.. a 10' pile of prickley pear cactus grows with each year. and not a moment of upkeep for them.. unlike the fence..

Ooohh! What kinds of trees did Erlandson use? On the Apples that you were training you say that you grafted them in the contact areas. Is that, um, easily done?

This is giving me TOO many ideas Whistling

oh..June..well.. it's kind of easy.. it does take a bunch of time for the grafts to really take hold.. the outer bark is cut away.. and the other living limb is treated the same.. then they are bound together and wrapped.. it's called approach grafting..
most plants can be used.. here's a link to a more elaborate fence than I was starting..
http://arborsmith.com/fence.ht...
alot of the trees he did were sycamores.. most plants will allow this with plants of the same type
here's a clip of them doing mangos. to get fruit from one to grow on the root of another.. he says they do avacados that way also.... you see these sold here as lucky bamboo.. [ which isn't really bamboo...] but they are grown together in designs from many roots..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...
they also do other fruit trees that way.. it's easier than a regular graft as they both get nourishment untill the graft has taken.. then it's slowly weaned from one to another.. in the tree circus all the roots are often kept active. his shapes are some times grafts done on the same plant.. back and forth between limbs...
it's easy.. give some a try..

WOW.... Thumbs up Thanks...
I love Alexes work... but his is a sad story... after decades of work... he opened to the public and got so fer attendees the first year.. and fewer the second... .. there was a sale of some of the tree art.. Disney I heard was interested... but finally there was an amusement park built right there... so at least his trees remain alive and cared for ... as with the bridge... it is a long time project ...
one of my favorite... although not Alexes... a great example of growing a useful item from the trees... and having it without the removal of the tree...
