November 5th and I had eggplants to pick. So crazy as it is simply so very late in the season for us. They are usually done for way before this.

Anyway, we had a very warmday. Almost 80 and felt like laye Spring. I had some of my eggplant plants still left in ground so I went and cut them all dow, Bagged up noe for the yard waste pickup.

But the plants had eggplants. I had picked eggplants last Saturday and I would think that was the end. But I did not get around to cutting down the plants. So today as I cut down the plants I found lots of fruits still left to pick. I picked them!!

I have two neighbors that REALLY love eggplant. Of course it is done for the year. Last week I told the one neighbor that I was going to cut the plants all down that day but I did not get to it until yesterday.

I did give that neighbor a bag of the eggplants that I picked yesterday. He seemed sad that the plants were now gone.

No point in keeping them. Covered in flowers but it is November and anything set now would be a waste of effort as there simply is no more time left for much growing.

If there is a newer eggplant thread tjen I can't find it.

So last year no eggplants here. But I do like to grow them. So just ordered seed of my very favorite to grow lovely purple stripped one called Annina/

Personally, I don't think every thread needs a yearly update.
If I grow any this year they will be the long thin kind, or a striped one, if the nursery has them. Last year all they had left was the big purple ones.
Plant it and they will come.

I seeded Louisiana Long green and a long purple named Fengyuan something, the seeds have sprouted, half still in a loop shape, it was 80* today, but for us, it seems we have Spring in Jan, Winter in Feb into Summer in Feb, but Winter is just around the corner in time to thoroughly confuse the plants.

Last year I had no eggplants so this year I want some plants again.

I had bought a seedpack of Annina. A really lovely hybrid Eggplant that is pretty large. I sowed seeds today.

Last year no eggplants. Myself, best friends and neighbor not happy. This year hope to have eggplants.

I have 4 eggplants in the garden as of 2 days ago. 3 plants are Louisiana Long Green eggplant, and I have 1 Fengshuan long purple - it was the closest I found to the Ping Tung eggplants I liked. They are planted where my tomato plants normally grow, and I am hoping they like it there.

One of my favorite eggplants to grow is Bride and it has been for years now. It's pretty late, but once it gets going it's productive. I like eggplants I don't need to peel and rarely grow any of the very large varieties. This year I'll be growing four. The Diamond last year was the first to produce. Slim Jim had pretty purplish leaves. Little fingers is new. I've grown Fairytale and other small ones before. Love to just slice lengthwise and toss in a skillet. Easy for hot summer dinners. Growing under lights to plant out in May (if all goes well Smiling ).
Bride Eggplant
Slim Jim Eggplant
Diamond Eggplant
Little Fingers Eggplant

We know @Newyorkrita loves Annina (it is pretty but dang when Id looked that seed was expensive). Anyone else have favorites to grow? It's a hot very DRY summer climate here.
Remember, it is dangerous to the environment and ILLEGAL in MANY states (CA is one) to mail plants/bulbs/cuttings in. Let’s all practice Do No Harm while we walk this earth and find other ways to connect to one another through gardening.

I did try Bride one year but I didn't like it. I do just love Annina.

The original thread asked about eggplants we didn't care for as well. I grew Bambino as the first really small eggplant I'd tried and found it could get bitter and the skin tough (again very hot dry summer here so I don't know if the tough skin would be an issue for folks with a bit of moisture in the air). I'd also tried Aswad from Baker Creek twice and it just didn't produce for me.

I like Fairytale and grew it a few years. Tad more expensive than others and although I enjoy smaller eggplants most were smaller than I like. It is an F1, so they'll always cost more to produce the seed.

My favorite Bride (admittedly a late one) is also an F1. I'm just a fan of the Asian style eggplants. Slim Jim and Diamond are early, so Bride's lateness doesn't bother me.

Peppers and Eggplants coming along. Here's hoping this weekend's cold blast (78° Thursday down to 50° Saturday and I'm always a tad warmer and cooler due to my exposed site) is our last cold blast and the veggie beds can warm up. I'll put up row covers after this weekend's thunderstorms.

My dad was mentioning Cali cold weather this morning- @93 yrs old he isn't a fan of this Spring- and he's down in Escondido, chuckl. My eggplants grow when I don't watch them, sigh, but they are out there still alive.

I have 10 Annina eggplants planted today. It is so warm out. Usually I wait until I have my tomatoes planted and then do eggplant. But I just wanted to get them planted today so I did. I hope they all grow.

I got two Millionaire planted. Might do a third. I didn't have much to choose from, maybe they got bought out early? These are a slim purple kind.
Plant it and they will come.
