I once collected a pocketful of seeds at an arboretum, before seeing a sign that forbade me not to do so at the end of the walk. I was embarrassed, but didn't know what to do with the seeds, so I just pushed them into the bottom of my handbag. I have 2 young trees that I treasure from those seeds Smiling

A fellow seed snatcher checking in.

My aunt was one, too. When she died in June, her daughter discovered her huge stash of snatched seeds. Knowing I love plants as much as her mother did, she gave them to me. It was like finding a treasure chest.

I too have snatched seeds when I get the opportunity. I have a girlfriend that also does it when we are out and come across plants that have dried blooms. I mostly take seeds when we are on a trip or somewhere special so I have a remembrance from the event.

I scored some Nicotiana seeds from the garden adjacent to my bus stop. It was a nice tall parent that was still blooming - long white tubes. I look forward to seeing seedlings.

Do hummingbirds work Nicotiana flowers?

In my yard, they love the tall fragrant varieties. The shorter, non-fragrant ones haven't attracted them at all.

Speaking of which, has anyone found a dwarf one that's fragrant?

Karen...

The dwarf ones have been hybridized to heck and back and in the process, most or all scent has vanished.

I owned a flower shop for a long time and had access to several hundred cut roses. Only one had a slight scent left. All the rest - poof - gone due to hybridization.

Yes, it's too bad. I love the scent of the old fashioned tall nicotiana. But they're a pain because they grow so tall and are a pain to stake.

But the short ones I've tried have had no scent.

We visit a local dog park most weekends and I may or may not be guilty of "assisting" the workers on deadheading. I only nip a handful here and there, and only if there's still a lot left on the plant.

I found an olive tree and some cherry trees among some office buildings by my house which is funny because I was actually looking for olive seeds.I grabbed some olives and some cherries, but I do not know what is the best way to save the seeds since I don't plan on planting them right away. The olive tree hangs over the side walk and isn't buy just one building and there are actually three cherry trees planted in a small patch on the side of the street. It's such a shame because there's olives all over the sidewalk and no one has cleaned them up or picked them.

Clean the pulp off and rinse lightly and pat dry. Allow to dry for several days out of direct sun. Package up in paper bags and store in a cool dry place.

Do you know what kind of Cherry?

I would gladly send a SASE for some Olive seeds. Thumbs up Whistling

I'm actually unsure what kind of cherries they are. The trees are tall and skinny with dark burgandy leaves. It's too dark for me to take a picture to send, but I can send you some olive seeds if you'd like. That's if I can manage to dry them right. I went last night and grabbed a bag full of olives that were on the grass. We don't have the right salt, so I can't cure them

Don't put salt on those you wish to plant. Thumbs up
The Cherries could be one of many, many types of Ornamentals. They are fairly easy to grow from seed, though they very well could be hybrids and don't come true.
.
I don't know about the olives - never had any fresh seeds.

I can take a picture of the cherry tree tomorrow when the sun is up. Oh I know not to put salt on the ones to plant. I was going to put salt on the ones I wanted to eat, but we don't have kosher salt and I don't know if regular table salt would work to cure them.

Hmmm no Kosher salt around? Interesting. But is there really a difference? Some things Kosher are treated/processed differently. But Salt?

Any Jewish posters here want to help us out? Thumbs up

The main difference in the salt is grain size. Kosher salt is processed less resulting in a larger grain. You will use less in a recipe that calls for kosher.

Yea, you need a more coarse salt to cure them from the videos i've seen on it. Oh and i dont know if you can see the tree in the picture or not. It was still too early with the street lights on and dark out for me to get a good shot of the tree, but that's what the cherry tree looks like.
