My approach has always been to add multiple things, whenever they become available. There is no magic addition, it just takes time and repeated additions of various organic matter to turn any kind of soil into black gold garden soil. I first started doing this in OH housing development clay, where the top soil has been removed & sold before the development was built. And it works the same in sandy AL soil that has the opposite problem of drying much too quickly.
