Received a rhizome from a grower that was suppose to be English Charm, but when the flower opened this is what I had. I've been looking over a lot of photos and Cranberry Swirl from Schreiners seems to look very much like this flower to me. I was wondering whether anyone who has this cultivar might respond as to whether this does look like their bloom or not? Thanks.

Funny thing - this came from Schreiners originally marked Cantina. They replaced it with the correct one the following year.

Did you order it from Schreiner's? Knowing where it came from may help narrow down the possibilities.

Welcome Richard.

Ask the supplier/grower what was nearby in the field. I have received several where the picker pulled the wrong rhizome, or maybe the clump next to it grew into its neighbor.

Leslie, this Iris was sent by Breck's. It was one of my earlier orders in my 'Iris life'.

I guess with Brecks you aren't likely to find out what it really is supposed to be then. Got to love clueless customer service. I had an iris labelled as one iris and the picture was of another iris. I emailed them that the picture was of the wrong iris and was told "well my boss says it is whatever it says it is.". Hilarious!

I actually have sympathy for the customer service personnel that 'don't have a clue'. They're thrust into a position with training that is probably geared towards the business practices/ financial desires of the company and might not have any real training or experience with the gardening aspect.

Back to the thread topic; here's another mislabeled Iris that we received that was supposedly Pass the Wine and I thought we had a 'miracle' since it sent a bloom spike starting in mid December last year and opened on January 15 (Pass the Wine is not a rebloomer). Then, thanks to looking at photos on this site; I realized that our cultivar is not 'Pass the Wine', but must in fact be a rebloomer as a result of the weird blooming time.

BTW, does anyone have an Iris bloom that resembles this beauty? I don't think I've seen any that quite look like this in my limited experience. All the best to everyone!

I have heard that Brecks often sends unregistered or culled seedlings. Very few of the ones I got from them were correctly named and after asking for replacements, got more of the same. That was a long time ago. And their pictures are enhanced. Most are not likely to even be a similar color. I went through that many years back before I joined an iris society and became enlightened!!!

Yes, evidently there are many of us here that have been 'Brecked' (maybe we should wear it as a badge of honor, or at the minimum a reminder of lesson's learned). But as I stated before, I've been very happy with their tulip bulbs as they've thus far been spot on and with a very rare exception high quality bulbs that performed well. This second mislabeled Iris was in fact not from Breck's, but a bonus Iris from a grower who received a large number of mislabeled Iris themselves that year and this was probably one of them. If it were a 'paid for' Iris, then I'd be disappointed. But as a bonus rhizome I had no complaints and in fact really loved this plant (Harold couldn't have drawn a more beautiful purple color with his crayon). Smiling

My Dad always had Breck tulips in the garden and yes, those are excellent. I think they do well with Dutch iris too. It is the addition of bearded iris that has caused them troubles.
I have had incorrect iris from at least 3 established bearded iris vendors so I do know mistakes can be made. But they have all worked to correct the situation. One even admitted that I wasn't the only one with a certain iris incorrect, and that preferred me to choose a different iris as a sub because they were doubtful about the rest of the certain iris being correct.
