I have adopted the practice of putting either coco liner material or plastic green mesh cut from fencing rolls around the plants on top of the soil and use landscape fabric staples to hold it down. I can occasionally see where some critter tries to dig in the pot, but it doesn't work if I have done my job well. I don't do that with every pot, but only those that the critters seem to bother most. Caladiums definitely fall into that category, and I'm sure lilies would too.
I won’t be my normally chatty self 
for a while as I have now started my 10 hour days and weekends at work until April 15, the receptionist (our only other support staff) is out for 12 weeks on maternity leave, husband has knee surgery December 23, QUICK trip to Kentucky over New Years with daughter for their Christmas 
, and still have to wrap all of the presents for 24 people and I haven’t even started yet.
