I'm afraid that's what I'm going to be reduced to. Potting. I think I want to pot some incoming lilies but after they bloom, brown, and die back, I don't know what to do with them. Confused

@Kabby
I bloom quite a few lilies in pots or reputable containers. Usually, after a year or two (over-wintered in garage), I plant the lilies from those pots into the ground (at fall-time). This really works well up here.
I recently ordered some (at half price) to pot up now and will put them under the covered stairwell (to access basement from outside). for spring bloom. Muscadet, Dizzy, and Butter Pixie.
Nothing that's been done can ever be changed.

Mission accomplished. I got a someone else addicted to lilies!

As for Kabby potting her lilies. I'm not sure if it would get cold enough for her to over winter then in her garage. But what you could maybe do Kabby, is dig them out of the pots after they die back, then store them in a freezer bag with their soil, and store them in the crisper drawer of a fridge. Just don't use the same drawer as fruits and veggies. Might be able to find more info about cold storage for lily bulbs

Ginny squirrels are my nemesis. There's a bazillion acorns in my yard, go get them! Last year was my first year to plant tulips and I added daffs in and around the bed. And I know it's a no no but the moth balls came out to do their duty. And they do work. I however don't use them in my pots, but I guess I might have to.

Dave I have a mini fridge downstairs, that I store bulbs until I'm ready to use them. A few soft drinks in there but no fruit! Smiling

Jack so are you saying that after they bloom, die back, you just leave them in the pot until you are ready to plant in the fall? I could just leave them under the house until time to plant.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Yes - on leaving lilies in pots till fall...actually some were in their pots for 2 or 3 years before transplanted into garden, especially short ones like in the Tiny series.
I'd let them continue to receive light in their pot (to build up for next season) till transplanted in the fall.
My potted lilies form a walkway from the back door to the garage.

After they bloom, they go behind the garage on a concrete slab to continue to get sun and await disposition.

edited to add - Yes, too if died back, under house area should work till re-planted.

@jmorth that's what I needed to know! In your second photo I see your gloriosa lilies. Do they attract hummers and butterflies?

Yes, starting about mid-summer, hummers visit most days till the end of August. Growing across the garage is another hummer favorite, Hummingbird Vine. Occasionally BF's visit as do bees.

It is Ginny! The only reason I didn't get one is because I have several climbers coming in the spring.

Jmorth, you are going to make me get a couple of these just to attract the hummingbirds! I just don't know anything about them. Will the climbers climb up a trellis like a clematis?

Do you have to bring in the Gloriosa Lily in winter? It is beautiful but not sure I have a place I want to put a trellis.

That's beautiful jmorth! I did not know that there was a climbing lily. Are there other color variations or just this one? I've been trying to decide on a climber for a while. Definitely adding this one to my list. So they drop leaves when they go dormant or do they keep their foliage all year?

I can send you some tubers around mid-May if you remind me.

Trellis is best. I like the tall ones in giant pots...here's a couple inspired by architect Frank Lloyd Wright > Thumb of 2016-12-09/jmorth/8df024 Thumb of 2016-12-09/jmorth/e63c08

Yes, they are brought into the basement Oct./Nov.. where it's stored dry in their respective pots/containers. Any debris left above ground in said pots is removed during their garage time in early October, before the move to basement. Usually when May rolls around I re-pot the tubers. I had to start cutting back when the number of tubers harvested exceeded 400. The tubers pretty consistently double every year in the pots; started out with 2 tubers from Mobot (Missouri Botanical Garden) in St Louis years ago.

And, yes there are several listed cultivars with somewhat different shapes and colors. for instance - G. greenii is yellow, G. carsonii has purple/brown aspect. Check out the database here for particulars.

If reminded in May I'll ship some to you for postage.
