I would love to see a separate morning glory forum outside of the vines forum. There is a lot of info we could share and of course our pictures!

Having a forum dedicated to MGs would provide focus on the plant group and I would enthusiastically contribute to it.

I wonder about all the plant-specific forums... I grow lots of different plants and am not wedded to any one type; hence I don't watch any specific plant forum. I therefore rarely participate in those forums unless I happen to catch something of interest in the 'recent thread' list, or start one myself to get an answer to a question. In some ways, I think separating out all these separate plant types is a disservice to the general membership, who may benefit from learning about (for example) what type of soil morning glories like or dislike. I have also felt (in some cases) like a bit of an interloper if/when I do jump in as most of the plant-specific forums tend to evolve into rather tightly knit circles. It seems to me that initiating a thread for a specific plant and perhaps specific issue in a more general forum would get more activity: e.g., Morning Glories-Soil Requirements in the All Things Plants or Perennials forum. Just my random thoughts. (And not picking on the morning glory people, I've thought this about all the plant specific forums.)

And kudos to RickM for responding to the interest with a new badge - the more the merrier in my mind.

I also grow several different plants, I like the ability to go right to a plant type to see what's going on and if I can garner any helpful info. To me its burdensome to go to a general category and sift through all of the threads to get info I need. I agree with you on the interloper status on a few forums.

I'm with RJ on this. I grow hosta, fern, shrubs, wisteria, orchids and much more. The thought of having to sift through page after page to find relevant information is too daunting a task. With separate forums, I can quickly go right where I need.

On a related/unrelated note, how long are morning glory seeds viable? I have some Grandpa Ott that I have forgotten to plant for two years now.

If seeds are stored in cool conditions (room temperature down to refrigerator temperature) and have been kept dry, they should remain viable for years, maybe decades. For example, I had great success germinating 7 year old Ipomoea purpurea seeds this year.

I am for an Ipomoea forum. From Wikipedia: Ipomoea (/ˌɪpəˈmiːə, -poʊ-/[2][3]) is the largest genus in the flowering plant family Convolvulaceae, with over 500 species. It is a large and diverse group with common names including morning glory, water convolvulus or kangkung, sweet potato, bindweed, moonflower, etc.

I have decided after reading a recent article about MGs that I will give those a go next year. I have always thought them beautiful with not just gorgeous colors and patterns but the bloom looking like silk. I have been afraid to plant those seeds because I heard all the tales about MGs being difficult to contain. The recent article lessened those fears. But I will keep Roundup near!

I would be much less inclined to use this site for info and resource if I had to wade through a big multi use heading and so I am a dedicated-forum format kind of girl. I would rather save the effort of wading and instead google my question. With a dedicated discussion area..I could also scroll through the many topics to see if any trigger an "oh yeah, I would like to / need to know that"

I have found the folks in the iris group on this site to be so darn full of good information. I gave an acorn to every single one that got me up and running!!! I am not part of the "tighter group" of iris lovers that are routinely talking in those discussions but neither am I an iris aficionado! On other sites, I have felt a chill wind ...but so far not on garden.org

Certain species of MG, like is said in Ronnie's article, produce many flowers and with each flower the seed pod can have as many as 6 seeds. Ipomoea purpurea, of which Grandpa Ott's is one, is especially like this. To control it one should harvest the ripe seeds or cut off and discard the green seed pods. That way the seeds won't fall on the soil and become volunteer plants in the following season.

I knew that pod kidnapping was the way to go...but my chosen site ( adequate sun and NO deer)
Does not exist except on the cedar arbor...and it is 10-12 feet where I would need to find and swipe those pods.

This is why we we need a morning glory forum so everyone can learn and enjoy them

I am rather fond of having plant specific forums.I like being able to go to a forum and either find, or search for a given topic specific to the plant I want information on. I also like the fact that there are many in the forum that can answer my questions, or start a new thread addressing the question I have.
If I have a rose question I go to the Rose Forum, etc.
I think it would be great to have a Morning Glory Forum.

Except one would have to actually GO to the morning glory (daylily, iris, rose, etc.) forum. No worries, though. I'm happy in my insulated world and will continue to just glance at the recent threads for anything of interest. The only morning glory I have is common white bindweed.

I use that method also Deb. I have found some very interesting things that I would have never thought about looking for.
