They do permit Deer Hunting With Bow And Arrow. The homeowner can permit them to hunt on their property. I have permitted them to come and hunt. Especially when they got so bad a lot of deaths on my property from starvation in the winter. Removal is expensive when they are on your property.

It is crazy. There I am losing plants (money) then they die and I still have to pay again to take them away.

I stopped at HD today. I needed some sand for the back of my truck. At the entrance was a large number of amaryllis bulbs. A sign was posted with them saying. All blooms in a bag 3/$10. I chose 3. At the checkout they came up as 6.98 ea. Not sure if sign was posted wrongly or computer wasn't updated. At any rate they gave them to me for the $10. I came home a happy camper!

I picked up two bags of Crocus sativus. This is my first time to grow them.

I tried growing sativus a few years back. The squirrel absolutely loved them ! Freakin' tree rats dug up and hauled 5 dozen of them away. Grumbling

OMG, that does not sound good, Rick. Blinking Thumbs down I had thoughts of planting some. Maybe I should put them in pots with chicken wire on top. Shrug!

Sorry to hear that Rick. I will give them protection when I plant them in the ground. Thanks for the heads up.

Congrats on being done with your planting Lily!

Rick, sorry to hear you lost so many bulbs to the squirrels. We've got them here too, along with the chipmunks, and the the deer here🙄!

Last year I decided to spray the areas where I planted my bulbs with Neem oil, after a set of newly planted tulips were dug up by the critters within a few days of being planted. I replaced the bulbs, sprayed the area where they were planted with the Neem oil, and they didn't get disturbed.

This year, I'm doing the same, and so far no problems. I spray the soil where the bulbs are being planted, the bulbs, the soil on top of them once they're planted, and the pine straw that they're mulched with. I also make sure not to leave any of the skins that come off of the bulbs on the ground, and I hope this method keeps working.

Today, I spent several hours outside, bundled up, and was able to plant 347 more tulips, despite our rainy weather. Only 408 tulips left to go, along with the 199 hyacinths, and my bucket of bulbs.

Yes. I have a total of 28 pots. Most of them will be moved to the garage.

These are my indoor bulbs. I hope to see blooms in the house till spring comes. :-)

Thank you Annette! I am glad you are able to plant some of your bulbs. I think a few more hours in a day will get your planting done. This is what I got planted in the ground a week or so ago. I wasn't able to plant my bulbs that day but I was so glad I got my TP in.

Annette,
How often do you re-apply the neem oil during the season? I ask because what I've read makes me think that it would have to be re-applied every few weeks.

The following is from http://npic.orst.edu/factsheet...

What happens to neem oil in the environment?
Azadirachtin, a major component of neem oil, is rapidly broken down. Microbes and light break down the pesticide in soil, water and on plants. The half-life of azadirachtin in soil ranges from 3 - 44 days. In water, the half-life ranges from 48 minutes to 4 days. It also rapidly breaks down on plant leaves; the half-life if 1 - 2.5 days. The remaining components of neem oil are broken down by microbes in most soil and water environments.

I've actually started covering newly planted stuff with nylon netting that you get from fabric/craft stores. I use the dark colors so it doesn't show up. I have yet to have a squirrel/chipmunk/deer get through it.

Rick, I spray every 2-3 weeks, when I get a chance. Last year, I put down landscape mesh over some the planted bulbs, and didn't pull it up before the bulbs emerged. It was tedious cutting the mesh away from the leaves. I'll have to check and see if I can find the nylon netting here.

Lily, nice roots and stems on your TP! Where did you get your Shima Nishiki from?

Check in a fabric store for the nylon net. It's usually around the velvet. Our Hancock Fabric closed back in the spring. I was able to get enough black, brown and dark green to last a lifetime.

The nice thing about the nylon net is that it's very lightweight. Air and water pass through like there's nothing there. But, the critters find out otherwise! In the spring, once the bulbs start coming up, they'll lift the netting as they grow. Then, I'll just peel back the netting along with any debris that collected over the winter.

I was a good boy today. Lowes had a big rack with LOTS of bulbs. 1 $ each pack. Twice I had some in my hand. Nope. Even for a dollar I had to resist. First time in my life. Thumbs up Rolling on the floor laughing I still have a bag of tulips in the garage. I will just likely plant them in a left over deck planter box and stick outside near the foundation.

@sgardener - When do you put them outside? Now? And what does "Most of them will be moved to the garage. " mean? TIA

Yes. Some of the bulbs are not hardy to zone 5 like Scilla peruviana.

Of course! It comes in/on a bolt and is priced per yard. I believe it's either 24" or 30" wide. Unless you want to draw attention to it, go with the dark colors such as black, brown, dark green or navy blue. These colors virtually disappear. Also, being darker, they may amplify the heating effect of the sun too. I usually put some rocks on mine to keep it in place. You could also use landscape staples.

If you need a lot of it, the Online Fabric Store (https://www.onlinefabricstore....) sells bolts 6'w x 40 yards for $33.05

So what I seem to be seeing here is that next Spring when I plant all the new lilies I've ordered the deer, squirrels and bunnies will dig them all up and eat them Crying D'Oh!
