I'm sitting here with ziplock bags marked with planting dates 2 weeks apart and as I sort seeds into them it struck me that I was "filing" them as I'd read of the pro's here doing. At the time I didn't know what that meant. I'm gettin' it! Woohoo.

Loving this new adventure. Lovey dubby

I'm ahead of the mailman today, but my Spidey senses tell me there are packages approaching.

Leslie, are you a new sower of seeds? A good quick and dirty reference for germinating a lot of different seeds can be found here: http://tomclothier.hort.net/

I keep it bookmarked.

I won't be able to give the final number until Monday afternoon.
The next to last package arrived today. One is missing and has no delivery confirmation number so if not here Monday will be removed from the swap. If that happens the seeds sent for that person will be returned to the senders.
I will start mailing back Monday afternoon. It may take a couple of days to get them all ready to go. There have been a couple of snags that slowed me down, but I'm working on it!

Hurray! Thanks for the update Alana. I already have some trays full of soil and ready to go. I really thought these seeds would stop me from ordering new things. Rolling on the floor laughing Nope. I ordered more seeds and plants in just the past week and my typical end of February plant craze has not even hit yet. Hopefully by that time I will be knee deep in seedlings and will be able to fight the urge for more.

dave said:I'm going to write in this thread later the instructions of how to germinate my crepe myrtle seeds. If you follow my instructions you should get nearly quick 100% germination. I just need to take the time to write it out. Smiling

@dave I'm all ears! I got some of your seeds and am very interested to hear about your technique for a hundred% success rate on germination. I have read they can bloom the first year. Is this correct?

Most of mine do indeed bloom the first year but you have to time it right and the plants need to get lots of good growth during those crucial summer months. That means very very good fertile soil and plenty of irrigation, and singing to or near them helps. Smiling

Germinating these is easy. When you get your seeds, you can use the seed packet they came in to stratify them. You must stratify them for 60 days!! No exceptions to this rule.

So, my seeds come in a real nice ziplock baggy (the bags were a gift from @RickCorey, thank you!). I then add quite a bit of dry vermiculite. If you don't have that you can use fine sterile potting soil. Mix it up really nice so the seeds are evenly distributed throughout the bag. Then add just enough water to the bag to moisten the contents. I use reverse osmosis water. I wouldn't want to add chlorinated water (but I'm not sure if that's just my paranoia.)

Mark with a sharpee the variety name and today's date on the outside of the bag, and put it in the fridge.

What I do is every couple weeks, take it, open it up, dump the contents into a clean bowl, mix it up quite a bit, and let it breath for a few minutes. Then repack it into the baggy and put it back into the fridge. Once the 60 days are up, take the contents out and spread them onto a folded paper towel. Spread it as evenly as possible, then fold in half and put it into a large ziplock or sandwich bag and place under growlights. (This is a form of the "paper towel method", which I'm sure you're all familiar with.)

Keep it warm (a heating pad helps). Check it daily. Within a few days you'll start to see germination. Pick each seedling out as they germinate and pot them into cells.

Transplant into the garden as soon as you think they are ready (the earlier the better! They languish when stuck in little pots). Make sure frost is long past. KEEP THEM WARM. Crepe Myrtles absolutely hate the cold and will be stunted, sometimes permanently. If it's cold outside, keep them inside your house.

I think I waited until mid to late April to transplant them into the ground.

This is what my bed looked like in mid July of the same year:

Thumb of 2017-01-21/dave/4bad82

You see they are all about 12 inches tall. About half of them bloomed in mid August and beyond.

Thumb of 2017-01-21/dave/138242 Thumb of 2017-01-21/dave/238ad9

I offered 10 packets of my special crosses and all ten were dibbed. I'm excited to see what kinds of interesting plants you all grow! Good luck!

O.K. great info. I would have never thought they needed cold stratification. I will try it. Why would it not work to do the paper towel method for the whole procedure in and out of fridge? Have you tried this yet? I trust your expertise of course but the lazy seeking side of me has to ask that question. I collected some seeds off my trees the other day and put them straight in to a paper towel and baggie just to see what would happen. It is good to know why they might not sprout this way.

There are actually two packages that have not arrived. Seeds for that person will also be returned to sender if theirs are not here tomorrow. There is no indication they were mailed. Sorry for the inconvenience.
I am in the process of comparing the host's composite of total packs against what is in the paper bags for each person. So far, so good.
I'm taking tomorrow afternoon off to get as many labels ready as possible and will follow with the others on Tuesday. No, no. Please don't try to stop me. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing It's a sacrifice I am willing to make. nodding

Here's an update on the swap.
Item 1. @luvsgrtdanes wins the Dianthus "Dancing Geisha" seeds for final number of people who participated, which in my book is the number from whom I received seeds. She guessed 40.

Item 2. Seeds for @MariposaMaid have been put in the return envelopes of the people who sent seeds for her. Unfortunately her envelope did not arrive and because there is no DC number it is impossible to say where it is in the postal system. This happened once in a GW swap and the seeds showed up the next summer. When I receive them I will return them to her asap. She may be open to arranging private trades.

Item 3. Seeds for @RickCorey have been put in the return envelopes of the people who sent them. If you chose something from him that you are still interested in receiving, he will mail those out to you individually. Tree-mail him your interest.

Lastly, I'm still working on getting envelopes out. I'm going to concentrate on that so may not get around to posting sent notices and DC numbers until tomorrow. Don't despair if you don't hear something tonight. Smiling

Better get the seedling mix ready...

@poisendartfrog etal,
I have just sent the following tree mail to all those who were expecting seeds from me in the packages being mailed out today and tomorrow.
To:
@Danita@duane456@EricaBraun@Esperanza@janinilulu@LaraJWB@lovesblooms@Iparkslp@molanic@patrob@Sundownr@tfeehaO1@vma4922@wildflowers

"Hello Seed Swappers,
The seeds you chose from me have not reached poisendartfrog in time for mailing out to you with your other seeds from this swap. I have prepared sufficient pkgs of the seeds you selected to individually send them to you now if you would be so kind as to tree mail me your address. This will gladly be done at my own expense.
Hoping to hear from you and get these seeds to their new sites! Thanks.
Judy"
