Tim - your Amanda doesn't look bright enough to me...just in that pic. Mine still has purple coloration (is yours in full sun?)
I agree with you Nico looks wrong.
I won't sing but I'll surely admit if I'm wrong.
Greg, my Amanda gets a half day of direct sun... the first half... 4-6 hours. This is what she looked like in March:
Imposter 'Nico' on the left, 'Dallas' on the right. I think they're the same variety. My guess is 'Dallas' was sold as 'Nico'. Much like the way some of use got 'Bronco' when they bought 'Strider'. Of course... it's just a theory.
Great photos Tim.
The best way to know if there is a difference between the two is to observe them over a period of time that includes all the seasons.
If you look at 'Dallas' in our database you will see there is a definite difference in the spring through summer. 'Nico' never attains this type of coloring. It will be fun to see what your two colonies look like this spring.
I would say those aren't the same plant, subtle differences. Like Lynn says, wait until spring!
I love when a semp looks really similar and then they are totally different for part of the year!

That's helpful to know. I was looking at 'Dark Cloud' this morning and I was getting suspicious of that one too. I think the weather is promoting some similar characteristics to appear in some cultivars. 'Temby' as well. Or maybe the weather is just effecting my judgement.
Right now it seems like there are numerous semps that could easily be confused with each other this time of year. I don't think it's your judgement Tim.
In fact I think I am going to have to use Chris's method of wiring/pinning down the newly arrived semp offsets. I do have the bird netting up, but the earth worms are busy pushing the newly planted offsets into piles.
So far the three varieties are easily identified, but there are some that would not be until next year.
I'm beginning to think 'Nico' is simply a chameleon. Here's the same plant in March and then in September of this year. The first one looks much more Nico-ish while the second make me say "no way".
Think you have to give it at least one whole season to see if it matches up. I kept noticing my 'Strider' looked like 'Santino' (which was incorrect) it took me 2 years to really say ok they are the same semp. Strider goes through so many color changes. Sounds like Nico does too
Here she is today with the offset Kevin provided at the lower left. I think it's a matter of growing conditions. Patty's 'Nico' images in our DB look similar. It will be interesting to watch and see if the two plants in this picture eventually sync up. If they don't then I'll keep Kevin's and heave-ho the other.
Update... here's my suspect 'Nico', the large one, looking reasonably Nico-ish. Kevin's offset that was given to me last year is the smaller red one. I would think that Kevin's will end up having much stronger red tips, as it did in the previous pics
